Renee Elise Goldsberry played Sylvia, Norm Lewis played Valentine, Oscar Isaac played Proteus, Rosario Dawson was Julia and Paolo Montalban played Eglamour in the 2005 revival

Rosario without the auto tune... Wonder how that was
Here's Rosario with the original "Julia" - Carla Pinza
Thanks! and thanks as well for the Taro Meyer LP cover. I used to own that record, but it wasn't very good. It was released while she was appearing in VERONA. I never heard about her again until she appeared in ZORBA many, many years later with Anthony Quinn.
Here's Rosario as "Julia"!

From the stills (especially) and the video (thanks!!) it certainly appears to have been mounted in a very similar design and spirit. No wonder you loved it.
Here's "Where's North" from the 2005 production...love the choreography!

I remember during the finale in the original production, not only was there confetti and streamers, but members of the company would stand in the box seats and toss frisbees back and forth over the house.
My favorite section of Jean Erdman's choreography was during "Thurio's Samba."

Just catching up on this wonderful thread! I love Two Gentlemen of Verona. Those pics are great Carlos. And egghumor, your comments about the original production are likewise.
No one ever mentions "Symphony" when they list off the great songs in this show. I love that song.
Also, Bring All The Boys Back Home and Mansion are standouts.
Wow, dear tazber! Another VERONA fan! I knew I wasn't alone in the world. This is comforting.
After I heard Night Letter on SIRIUS, I was hooked on this musical. The songs are so catchy and the lyrics are so playful. The video in the NYPL archives shows a joyful production (save for a bored Rosario Dawson). I did a dramaturgical project for class on a potential staging in Miami...I just really need to see it live.
My favorite lyric:
"Don't keep her a prisoner of your imagination
This magic dove will find my love in his jungle destination" (Love Me)

Hey tazzy ~ You're not alone in your love for SYMPHONY.
THURIO'S SAMBA is a funny, catchy song but I have to skip it on my iPod when I'm commuting or I'll be laughing my ass off and people will be looking at me as if I'm crazy.
@rougeduck: They must've caught Rosario on an off night. When I saw her she was engaging.
I was a fan of the recording until I finally saw the 2005 Delacorte production and this show shot up to one of my all-time favorites. It was the single most joyous experience I ever had watching a musical. While the production could have used a little tweaking in the direction and choreography, it was still an utter delight from beginning to end. I'll never forget the audience reaction to Bring All the Boys Back Home, which still gives me chills. So many amazing moments: Night Letter, Love Me, Thurio's Samba, Where's North and even Eglamore had utterly brilliant visual moments that had to be seen to truly understand how this show reaches its potential. Only Urinetown made me laugh as much.
It's a real shame the production didn't transfer to Broadway for a revival, especially during the Bush years. Thank you so much for this thread and the photos.
Wow Mister Matt, you put into words exactly how I felt when I saw it! It was magical! I was hoping and praying it would transfer to Broadway or that it would somehow tour as I was living in Miami at the time and was visiting NYC when I saw it in the summer of 2005.
For whatever reason it didn't happen. I still wish someone out there would give it a shot.
It's my pleasure to share the pics, I had no idea how many people love this show as much as I do all I ever hear is people putting it down because of you-know-what (which I am purposely not even going to get into)...so it's refreshing to hear the opposite.

In the 2005 production, Norm Lewis and Rene Elise Goldsberry stole the show. Oscar Isaac and Rosario Dawson were mediocre.
If anyone has the very abridged Original London Cast Recording you will notice many songs missing including the title song, also Julia's song "WHAT A NICE IDEA" is stripped of it's Spanish and replaced with a lot of humming and la-la-la's in melody to fill in the gaps.
I'm assuming the actress playing the part didn't know how to speak it, so the role must have been severely altered as Julia and Proteus' lines/songs are peppered with Spanish throughout. Julia even has an extensive scene where she tells Proteus off completely in Spanish.

Yeah, the Julia in London was played by Jean Gilbert. I remember seeing a photo of her and she appeared very Caucasian. I assumed all the hispanic references had been dropped. Though it was interesting to hear Julia's songs performed with a more legit singing voice. It is too bad the London recording is so severely truncated (as is the Swedish cast recording). I would love to have a fresh new recording of the score (especially if it captured the vocals of Lewis and Goldsberry) if it could capture the spirit and the energy of that 2005 production. The OBC is great, but some of the vocals are strained and the mixing/editing really needs to be cleaned up (especially Follow the Rainbow).
I didn't even know there were London and Swedish recordings! Are they available?
Yeah, but they were only ever released on LP and hard to track down. The London recording is particularly interesting because it includes the song Howl which replaced Mansion. They felt the real estate references made in Mansion were too American for British audiences to pick up.
I saw Larry Kert as Proteus on the road, complete with back-flips.

In the currently licensed script, "Howl" is actually part of the standard play, with "Mansion" as a supplement that can be substituted at the discretion of the producers.
