More fabulous photos from the New York Shakespeare Festival's 2005 production of TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA at Central Park's Delacorte Theater starring Rosario Dawson, Norm Lewis, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Oscar Isaac and Paolo Montalban.
Wow I had no idea Larry Kert was in TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA. No disrespect to Mr. Kert who I love on the WEST SIDE STORY and COMPANY cast albums but wasn't he a little long-in-the-tooth compared to the rest of the cast who were in their 20's? How did he fare?
Did I mention that Two Gentlemen won Best Musical over Follies? Apparently some people are upset about that.

I've gotta admit that I'm also a big fan of this show. I saw the original Broadway production and the recent park revival as well. Still like it!

I saw the original production several times, twice in the park in
1971, and then about 5 times at the Saint James. I loved it.
The production in the park was so successful that Papp moved it to Broadway. But the first preview on Broadway was a disaster.
Everything that went well in the park looked obvious. There was really no reason to replace Carla Pinza; La Lupe was just gross and out of place. Also, Jerry Stiller had only done the park run, and for the Broadway production he was replaced by an actor named Anthony Holland. That also did not work and Holland was soon replaced by John Bottoms, who had already played Lance at the end of the central park run. Davila was good, but the part itself was underwritten and defeated most of the actresses who played it.
Interesting memory. Night Letter, the duet with Valentine and Sylvia was staged so that at the height of Sylvia's antics, a chorus boy came out and literally carried her off the stage. The guy they chose for this had a forlorn look on his face, very hangdog, watching him it seemed like someone had just asked him to come out from the Central Park audience to take her off. His name: Jeff Goldblum
Thanks for that info daredevil. I love to hear from people who actually saw the original production. La Lupe's lack of discipline is what got her canned. I love the woman, she was a force to be reckoned with and an engaging, passionate performer but just so wrong for this. I've always wondered why they didn't get Carla Pinza back or for that matter why they replaced her to begin with.
