papalovesmambo,
this is very strange. who here put Gypsy and Funny Girl in the same category as Taboo? Certainly not me, I have not seen Taboo.
Where did you get a notion that Funny Girl and Gypsy would be in the same category as Taboo?
Perhaps you should read my original post again.
Some people had written that Taboo would not find an audience because people did not "care" about Boy George.
This thread was about how, people really did not have any great conscious "caring" about Fanny Brice or Gypsy Rose Lee until musicals immortalized them. This thread was to be about how a musical can create interest in a subject and we do not have to have a predisposed "caring" about the subject.
How did you get out of what I wrote that anyone was comparing the attributes and quality of Taboo to Gypsy or Funny Girl?
Again Papa, kindly reread my original post in this thread. It would have been ludicrous and actually impossible for me to begin to compare the quality of Taboo with any other show, simply because I have not seen it.
Thank you:)

I'm enjoying barb's increasingly hysterical posts regarding the success of Ms. O'Dowd(who seems to be spending a grea tdeal of time online at present time, he's either here or placing a horrific ad on Gaydar.com), but it's to be expected as the reviews will be out in a few blessed hours, the show must go on and all that, stiff upper lip TABOO cast, think of the nice vacation you'll have in the city, it's wonderful this time of year...unless you are in an ill-fated Broadway misfire! And speaking of "character" I think dear Count Giovanni Von Krolock will have a longer shelf life in the history of the theater than Boy's alter ego!
But, Teach, I think the comparison is fair in one respect. People cared about those shows because (at least in the case of GYPSY) it is one of the best shows ever written, giving one of the most beloved theatre icons of all time the role for which she will always be identified and (in the case of FUNNY GIRL) it contained one of the greatest star-making turns (although La Streisand was certainly not a nobody when she did it) in all of theatrical history. So much so that the show seems nearly unrevivable. I would argue that the love for FUNNY GIRL and GYPSY have very little to do with the people they are based on and much more to do for the shows themselves.
I have yet to see TABOO so I will not venture a guess on its artistic merit. But I would hazard the guess that if it was indeed brilliantly written and performed, it would inspire a lot of the same interest that GYPSY and FUNNY GIRL inspired.
>>>it is possible taboo will create a boy george who never really
>>>existed. perhaps he will become an important musical theater
>>>"character" like fanny or gypsy.
i think that it's almost impossible to divorce the character from the show in both cases here, but my point was that the boy george character in taboo is, to my mind, not even the most important character in the production. therefore i have a hard time seeing how this character will have a shelf life longer than krispy kream jelly donuts.
robbiej,
exactly:) thanks for clarifying my meaning.
papa, of course. it seems from what I am hearing that you are absolutely correct about the likely fate of Taboo.
the only comparison that should be made between george and barbra is their big noses full stop, misfits and freaks will like taboo and there are a lot of them about, homophobia is relevant because it is alive and exists, i'm so glad i'm amusing some of you god forbid you have a sense of humour or speak normally.Madonnas seen it and loved it apparently, long live kitsch.
Oh please.
Jocelyn Wildenstein is alive and exists (barely) and she's not relevant in the least!
i have two things to say regarding this "real life person on stage musical"---
a) O'Dowd is much better known than Peter Allen, but TABOO doesn't have a movie star headlining it (though Boy George is a celebrity, he is not a movie star...it's odd he plays a another character though. It would be like Liza playing Judy in BOY FROM OZ, or June Havoc playing Mama Rose).
b) anyone remember MARILYN (Monroe) THE MUSICAL?
there are a lot of horrific sites on gayday believe you me
i can't see liza performing an anal douche on stage though can you? like leigh bowery used to do
