LovinGoodMusicals-
Merle as Kala is why Tarzan was almost worth it for me. She really held the show together, and I was glad to see her in a role other that Joanne in Rent.
Since there seem to be a couple of people who like Merle in this thread, Just letting you guys know that Merle is doing a gig on Monday, August 7th at Ars Nova. You can get tickets here:

WOW!!! I wish i were in town, crap! She is really wonderful, I am just bummed she doesn't get to belt in Tarzan like she used to when she played Joanne in Rent. That's talent.
What a great cast! And to get the speech thing more clear- he speaks to the apes fine, he just can't communicate to humans.
Saw Tarzan today....full cast. Josh was awesome today. He was riffing today in places I haven't heard before. He rocks! Ok, before I start fangirling :)
Anyway....got to the rush line @ 9:45 and was #3 which got me CC107...best seat...dead center. Glad I got there early!
Just as there are movies for everyone, there are Broadway shows for everyone.
Theatre snobs need to lighten up. Disney has revitilized Broadway and cleaned up New York. I thank them.
AND I enjoyeed Tarzan too. It's a spectacle, fun, flashy.
"Sweeney Todd" is a few blocks over for the adults.
But, did anyone see Helen Mirren and her husband there last night? With Phil Collins?
They seemed to enjoy it too, and it just goes to show, if a serious and respected stage and film actress can enjoy the show with her friends, so can we all.
Mrs. Tingle met Tarzan and had fun!!!!!
Poor Charlayne Vivika: "I would jump on Josh Strickland and rip off his loincloth in an instant!"
So very gay...

Merle is spectacular as Kala. She shows how torn the character is between staying true to Kerchak, but still having to protect Tarzan. She's a powerhouse even when she isn't belting.
SCB- Do you remember what songs he riffed on? I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the show!
Ponine--He riffed on the reprise with "Turk" and one other place. It was my third and not final time seeing the show. As always, the cast was very sweet at the stage door.

I posted this in the Jenn vacation thread too, but it seems Josh Strickland is going to be on vacation the first week of August. Kevin Massey's site says he is going on from August 2 to 6th, and Joshua Kobak's says August 1 and the matinee on the 2nd. I saw Joshua's first Tarzan, and thought he was fantastic, and I'd be very curious to see Kevin's take on the role. May be a fun time to go!

I saw both Joshua Kobak's and Kevin Massey's first time on, which occurred within days of each other. It would be interesting to see both of them in the role again, considering that they were both probably extremely nervous when I saw them. Having seen it a few times with Josh Strickland in the role before that, it was amazing to see how great the two of them were when something went wrong. Like when Joshua Kobak's torch was supposed to light but didn't, he simply went on with the script without it being lit and the audience probably never knew the difference. If anyone sees them while Josh is out, please report back!

When i saw the show and Merle started to sing "You'll Be In My Heart" i just remember thinking that her voice was PERFECT for that song! It sounded so amazing. I want to see that show again!
