Posted: 7/21/06 at 4:51pmI got the CD the other day only because I couldn't find the Bernarda Alba recording, and I actually like most of the songs. They're all decent - nothing groundbreaking - but enjoyable to listen to. However, I still don't think Josh Strickland is a very convincing Tarzan. They should have made Tarzan a baritone like Matt Bogart, not a high pop tenor that has no roughness to his voice. His voice is nice to listen to, but it just doesn't fit the "idea" of Tarzan. And I'm not sure I get on the song "Different" when he's singing all these complex sentences, etc. and then he can't speak to Jane correctly? Is he suppose to be singing "in his head?" or what?

Gotcha. Still not sure how I feel about it, but that makes a little more sense. I might have to see this show, but I very resistent to it because it just seems so half-assed. I don't mean the cast, I mean the creative team.
But the cast is in a bad show, it's not a reflection on them, I think most of them got positive notices, but it's just how the industry works. It's like with Brooklyn, good cast, horrible show.

i like the way it's done. it's better than hearing a voice-over.
and judge for yourself. there's people on here who have said they didn't expect to like it but did.

About the voice-over: I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think I remember hearing in an interview that in one of the first conceptions of the show, they had Tarzan on stage and then someone else narrating or singing off-stage or something like this. Did anyone else ever hear that, or am I thinking of a different show?

Posted: 7/21/06 at 10:14pmthat would have been keeping true to the movie, using a narrator instead of Tarzan singing the songs. i thought they used that concept in the early workshops (wasn't it Adam Pascal who did that part?)... but it's much better this way!

Yeah Adam was the narrator in the workshops.
I'm so glad that people are actually enjoying this show. I saw the April 8th Matinee preview with my best friend and her mother, and all 3 of us enjoyed it immensely. Sure it has its flaws, as every musical does, but overall the performers really make the show worthwhile. The music was gorgeous, and most of it was upbeat, so it kept your attention. Overall it's just a fun show with a sweet, and crazily talented cast. Plus there's Merle Dandridge, Chester Gregory II, and Jenn Gambatese all in one show! What more can a theatre-goer ask for?

the thing i love most about it is how you get sucked in so quick. forget the preshow announcements... bring on the storm and BAM! you're a part of it.
of course i sat front row, so i realy felt it, especially with gorillas flying over our heads :-P

I sat off to the left side, so nothing was really RIGHT over my head, but it was still awesome. I don't know if they still do this or not (I definitely need to go back and see the show again), but I loved when the butterfly came over the audience.
I love this show despite the critics.

i sat front row, too! (dont you just LOVE it? :) )
anyways, yeah, the opening sequence SUCKED ME RIGHT IN. WHAT A WAY to start a show! i was breathless by the end!
and i also loved the curtain before the show starts. it's a very smart idea, having the picture of the ship reach africa when the show begins.

Posted: 7/22/06 at 11:56amIt seems that most of us on this thread saw it first row! There really is just something special about being completely sucked into their world that makes it so exciting. I really felt like I was in it. I've seen a lot of shows front row, but it has never felt quite like this. Too bad every seat in that theater isn't front row. Maybe then some people might change their opinions...

i agree, curly
front row's great because you can really see the tears in the actor's eyes when they're sad, and you can see the sweat on tarzan's body after he's fought the cheetah. they're close enough to touch, and you get sucked into this...amazing world. i've sat front row for other shows, too, and no other experience was like this.

It was nice meeting everyone at the show Thursday.
Glad I started this little thread!
And to add to the mix...I just put up some photos taken at the stage door.
Under my "gencamera" file!

Posted: 7/22/06 at 7:56pmI am dying to see this again. I was going to rush today but had rehearsal. I am thinking of going into the city tomorrow to student rush it. I should be ok getting there by 10 right? I assume they sell them at 1 for a 3PM show? Anyone else rushing?

Merle has some voice!
I saw her at Ars Nova with Manoel Feliciano a while back!

Merle is amazing... that woman does no wrong on that stage. Her voice is perfection and she puts so much emotion into the role. I don't think there could have found anyone more perfect for the role.
not to mention she's SO friendly and a very beautiful woman
