I know there a already a few long Tarzan threads, and I've looked through them. I see the score touched on now and then, but please induldge me if I start a new thread to ask people about the songs specifically. How are the songs and how is the score as a whole? I will admit to a negative prejudice as I find most Phil Collins songs to be insipid dreck, including "You'll Be In My Heart." (Aimee Mann, I am so sorry about that Oscar disaster!) BUT, trying to keep an open mind, let me ask: How do you like the new songs and the score as a whole? Catchy? Too pop? Uneven? Just right?

I love the new songs. "For the First Time", "Waiting for this Moment", "Different", "Who Better than Me", and "Everything that I Am" are my new favorites from the show, along with the old "Strangers like Me" from the movie.

I saw Tarzan last night, and I'd go along with insipid. I thought the whole score was an endless parade of forgetable adult-contemporary ballads. I wasn't excited by any of the songs or by the show.

Mediocre, at best....just like the whole show itself.

Songlist Review:
Two Worlds, You'll Be In My Heart, Son of Man, Strangers Like Me, Trashin' the Camp --> great songs, memorable, you'll come out singing

Jungle Funk --> unnecessary

Who Better Than Me --> the only good "non-movie" song

No Other Way, I Need to Know, Waiting for This Moment, Sure As Sun Turns to Moon, Different, Like No Man I've Ever Seen, For The First Time, Everything That I Am --> dreck. Too many soaring power ballads. Absolutely unexciting and disappointing.

Well, it's written by Phil Collins....

so it sounds like the waiting room of a dentist.

**Moment of Humility**
He has built a successful career as a song writer, while I couldn't write a song to save my life. I have no place making fun of him. His music just grates on my nerve.

I respect Phil Collins, but I have never really been a big fan of his scores. I didn't think Tarzan was anything special. The power of it comes from the spectacle and the acting.

Seriously. I was so disappointed by this show, particularly the music. There weren't any upbeat or comedy numbers to balance all of the boring ballads, and this is a Disney show! I would have even welcomed a "Sussudio" somewhere in there. The kids sitting around me seemed so uninterested, especially when monkeys weren't bouncing around on harnesses.

I like Phil Collins and I LOVE Strangers Like Me but the rest is crap.

I've never even seen the movie cause I can't stand the "you'll be in my heart" song and, well, basically Phil Collins' music at all. Maybe I'll like it if its more theatrical. is it more theatrical? Are there any big belty type numbers or is it an easy score to sing?

If you like soaring pop power-ballads, TARZAN is the show for you. If you like real theatrical music, see something else. But the effects are great.

No- The score is anyting but theatrical. There is one number I thought was fun adnt hat was "Trashing the Camp". The rest was, like other people said, one big ballad. Think of ALW without the show and the theatricality.

I haven't seen it yet (the lotto hasn't been my friend)... but I'm going to hazard a guess that your opinion of the score and the show in general is going to hinge a lot on your opinion of the original film. I, for one, adored the original movie (one of the last even semi-decent animated films Disney's come out with lately) and enjoyed the music for the most part (though I'm not the biggest fan of Phil Collins in the world, I thought it worked for the movie). I have a feeling this is going to be one of those "love it or hate it" shows.

I'd say see the show and decide for yourself (though the lotto is a little crazy right now... if I loose one more time I'm going to punt that stupid gold spinny thing into the middle of 46th street).

Trashin' the Camp is one of the best scenes I've seen on stage in a long time. That and the opening sequence truly employ the technique of "Disney Magic."

Not sure what my musical tastes are. They're ever evolving and changing. Never thought I'd like Jane Eyre, but I do. But also love Sweeney Todd and Company. So who knows. I probably won't see this, at least not for another year.

When I could not get discounted preview tickets, I balked @ $ 110 tickets. Forgetting about my wifes accident, this may have been a good move. Still smarting over paying full price for Dracula & DOTV, I will wait for TDF or Bway Box discounts on this. It all depends on my wifes recovery

I never saw the movie & I am not familiar with Phil Collins work so this is all new to me. Disney has deep pockets & if they believe in it they will back it to the hilt.If they sense they have a dog on their hands, they will not hesitate to pull the pin real quick

If they had any doubt in this show, they wouldn't have had a cold opening on Broadway. They would have done like "on the record" and toured it or something.

And tickets for previews top out at $75.

So the only enjoyable songs are the ones from the movie?

Personally, I really enjoy the songs from the movie.

I've asked this before, but don't recall getting an answer - to those of you that have seen the show - is there enough new material to qualify Collins as a potential Tony nominee?
