Posted: 2/13/04 at 5:16pmUnless the London version has changed the show alot I see no reason for a Broadway production. I do think that it has some of ALW's best music (which isn't saying much), however the plot is really nonexistant and the score is rather self indulgent at times. I do love the title song and a few others. I saw the production with Alice Ripley in DC and it was horrible, mostly due to the direction and Alice's inability to hold an entire show by herself. But the fact remains that the musical is extremely flawed, even though I love many elements of it.

I didn't enjoy this show. The London production (which closes tomorrow) was pink. It was so one-sided. So female. So sickly. The critics would tear it apart, it has lyrics like -
"Speed dating, speed dating
Tick cross tick cross tick"

I saw the London production as well and was not impressed at all. They seemed to advertise it as a sort of Sex and the City type thing....and it was a total letdown.
I heard that Denise Van Outen's name has come up in discussions about a production of Evita that will be in London. Personally, I don't think she has the voice for it, but that's just me.

I have the CD but I do not like Denise van Outen's vocals. I saw Julie Alanah Brighten perform the role and she was brilliant. I love this show - I think it is one of ALW's best scores, full of great songs. (Although no one will ever sing them quite like Bernadette!) There are 5 new songs written for this production - one in particular, "Somewhere, Some place, Some time" is a really nice number - and "Speed Dating" is hilarious!
With the right casting, this could be a hit in New York.
