"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

How much did his ashes go for?

His ashes were not found. They are believed to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. A gentleman in an overcoat with an upturned collar muttering death threats against Jerome Robbins under his breath and bearing a striking resemblance to the late Mr. Laurents was the last person seen with them.

OK, I bought two things at this auction today. One was Lot 180, a Mahogony shaving mirror. I got it for a song. If anyone ever had a tryst with Mr. Laurents and can verify where this was in his house, I'd love the story.

Second, I bought an old Smith Carona typewriter (Lot 561) that used to belong to Mary Hemmingway. Laurents acquired it in 1986 when she died. I don't know if he bought it at auction or if they knew each other.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
