I have to remember to go to old posts. Im Auditioning for Nickel and Dimed in about a month and I was panicking because I couldnt decide on a monalogue!

As someone who's been Resident Musical Director at an Equity theatre for 28 years, and done over 100 musicals, let me say two things:
1: No mediocre performer has ever been cast because they had a really clever, original choice of audition song.
2:No brilliant perfomer has ever NOT been cast because we were tired of hearing their "overused" audition song.
All these suggestions are fantastic. Does anyone have a website where you can search and download monologues without purchasing the entire play? I'm broke for the next two weeks but I'd like to get a headstart on memorizing my piece, and then I'll get the play to understand the context better.
Also, has anyone heard of a play called Nickel and Dimed? Thats what Im auditioning for, but I cant find ANYTHING about it!
i'm auditioning for a part in west side story...would it be too brazen to sing a song from that (this will be my first audition for a musical)
What is everyone's take on...
Female
The Story Goes On (Baby)
With Every Breathe I Take (City of ANgels)
Long Before I Knew You (Bells are Ringing)
I only really heard the piece from "Bells..." but it's so sweet! I dont know how well it would show off the voice though.

bellaprincipessa: I think it depends on the show. With West Side Story, everyone knows the music and singing from the show won't really show them a lot (besides: what is there to sing from that show?). However, if your auditioning for a really obscure show that no one has ever heard about, it's good to sing something from the show; it shows them you know musical theatre. But for West Side Story, I'd steer clear of music from the show.
i like to sing Dance Ten Looks Three from Chorus Line, at some audtions. I get mixed reactions from that though.
For my theater class I need one classic monologue and one contemporary...one comedic and one serious...I'm a junior in HS...any thoughts?
A good play to look for a contemporary Dramatic monologue which is age appropriate might be "Eleemosynary" by Lee Blessing. It is a sort of kooky play but there is a good dramatic monologue in there that I used for an auditon recently.
I think my sister did one from there...I'll ask her about it...thanks
I was thinking about using the first minute or 2 from the song '42nd Street'... Do you think that is over used? I'm not sure.
any ideas for the audition? i want something different, since a lot of people will either sing something from wss, les mis, or a disney tune (high school production)...i was thinking maybe something from annie get your gun...
I wanna do a monologue from Sylvia by A.G. Gurney...I found one...but does anyone have any more?

I'm auditioning for Seussical in 2 weeks, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a song (16 bars actually) for a baritone. I'm having a bit of trouble finding something in my range that hints at the style of Seussical. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Amneris, you suggested the song "Who's Been Sitting in My Chair" from Goldielocks. Do you know of a place on the web where I can hear a clip? They have it at Amazon, but no sound clips are available. What vocal range is this and is it upbeat or ballad? Thanks for any info.

I love you kelly.!!! I think the monologue will be just fine for your audition. Charlie Brown work is actually kinda difficult to do! Just make sure you don't play it TOO much like a kid. I love you

I'm auditioning for "On the Town" at my high school, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions obout what i should sing for the audition. I would probably go for the part of Chip(Frank Sinatra in the movie). Could anyone help me?
hmmm this is what i have heard regarding auditions for colleges:
1) a song or a monologue is EXACTLY the same as the essay, the whole point is to showcase yourself. so try to pick songs or monologues that actually mean something to you. if you can steer clear of trite pieces you'll have an easier time, because i mean really, every teenage girl feels that on my own is EXACTLY about her, so you'll have a slight advantage over the other applicants. it's like the typical essay on places you've lived: you've moved a gazillion places, and you've just learned SOOOO much...it's probably true, and moving, and says a lot about you...but it doesn't really make you very original.
2) as for the females singing male songs: for some reason the song "being alive" is a lot more popular when sung by a woman, although its originally meant for a man. its an example. they told me this when i asked about monologues: it is very interesting if a woman auditions with a male monologue from hamlet, even if its to be or not to be, because its a MALE role, and it may make you look very good...plus, shakespeare wrote ALL his roles for men, even the female ones, so why should it matter? but the same impression that you get from the image of a girl acting to be or not to be, might happen if a girl is reaaaally original and picks a male song....not while i'm around is a great song for a girl to sing, by the way, i saw it at a concert and it was just one of those songs that transferred sex VERY easily...as always, its about being original, but being YOURSELF. if they ask you why you picked a song, don't just say that you relate to the song and its your favorite song in the whole world. but say what that song says about you...its just another essay!
im also auditioning for college this year. my strength as a singer is the belts, like, im serious, im LOUD AS HELL. (it works to my disadvantage in everything else i do, people always scream at me to stop yelling, for example - but it helps me sooo much when i sing)....for example, a song like defying gravity is PEFECT for me, because i can really belt it. but then again, its overdone and overused. should i pick a quieter, unbeltable song over such an easy belter??
also, does anybody know if there's an actual accompanist or if you can bring a tape with the background music (to solve the sondheim problem for example?
another issue i have is that, although i can appear really young (12) and really old (24 or 25), im really flexible for roles. in fact, most of the characters ive done in high school performances have been women in their 30's (baker's wife) 40's (miss hannigan, mrs paroo possibly), and women in their old age (arsenic and old lace). i guess that means i can act convincingly mature...should i try a maturer song or monlogue, or stick with something that's my age that i may not be able to perform as well??
thnx a lot!!
to those who submitted monologues and songs, thank you SOOO MUCH!!!!
ps. what do you guys think of singing home, the finale from the wiz? im not african american and i know that this character is usually played by african american girls...should i still give it a shot? ....and what about singing in another language? or opera? oo...and is "meadowlark" from the bakers wife too overdone???
haha thank you chris!! i love you too! see you tomorrow.
lyfeisacabaret.... I'm in seussical right now, and for the audition, I sang De-Lovely from Anything Goes, it's got a pretty good upbeat sound. Also, TMM and Oliver were used by our Horton and JoJo.
