*Bump*
Seems there are a lot of song suggestion posts right now and this is a very helpful thread.
HALELUJAH, BABY! was DATED when first opened in 1967. This "History Lesson" of the Black experience in America was filled with so many racial stereotypes and misconceptions I'm surprised Martin Luther King didn't organize a march against it!
The fact that it won the Tony for Best Musical only demonstrates how feeble the competition was that year (THE HAPPY TIME, HOW NOW, DOW JONES, ILYA DARLING.)
There was some talk recently of "rethinking" the show for a revival on Broadway. Thank God it hasn't happened yet. :)
Some Good dramatic monologues:
A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE - Blanche Arriving in New Orleans
THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON MAN IN THE MOON MARIGOLDS - Beatrice venting about her living conditions
OUR TOWN - Stage Manager has several
THE TIME OF THE CUCKOO - Leona's Breakdown
A RAISIN IN THE SUN - Walter's Decision to take Money from White Racists so Younger Family Will Not Move Into All-White Neighborhood
Hope this helps! :)
Another good idea is to avoid anything that's currrently new on Broadway because EVERYONE uses those songs. Avoid Wicked particularly the song Popular because that's extremely overused! It makes me mad because I've been wanting to use that for an audition song but everyone uses that song. Thanks for the great advice! I'll definately use it!
I've read not to do any songs that are known for having someone do them, such as "Don't rain on my parade" or "I'm the greatest star" because those are apparently considered Barbra's songs...
Bump---for all the people posting new 'audition help' threads.
Alright well as long as we are bumping this thread I have a question:
We talk constantly about songs being overused and I was wondering if the song "I Caint Say No" from Oklahoma is overused. It seems like it would be, but I've actually never really heard people doing it and I think it would be a fun song for me to sing at an upcoming audition...thoughts anyone?
If any girl/woman needs character songs, "Sensitivity" from Once Upon a Mattress and "Little Girls" from Annie are great. Especially if you are like me and love to sing, but just aren't great at it, and acting is really your forte.
I'm not sure if "Cain't say no" is overdone or not, but Cincinnati Conservatory has a bit of a brochure/flyer talking about what they like to see in auditions and what not, etc., and they say not to sing "Cain't Say No."
Also, in the Kander and Ebb songbook, a good low ballad (although it's a duet, it could be used as a solo if you were to sing 16 or 32 bars of it), is "Why Should I Wake Up."

Never use a song that a huge star has done, unless you do it better. Also make sure you use a song that shows off the personality of the character your auditioning for. A great song to use would be "How Shall I See You Through My Tears?" from Camp also from an old musical, but I'm not sure of the name. Anyway other great girl songs are "Wizard And I", "Good Morning Baltimore"(Hairspray), and "I'm Not Going"(Dreamgirls). For guys I like "I Used To Be The King"(The Producers), "Dancing Through Life"(Wicked), "Mister Cellophane"(Chicago), "Blow High, Blow Low"(Carousel). These are all fun songs.
ok, I have a few questions. If I have an audition that's dance and everything all in one, what should I wear? And would it be ok to sing "home" at an audition for Rapunzel? I thought that would either work, or be really stupid, since it fits in with the story of Rapunzel. ok, now, around how old is Avril/Mallory in City of Angels? Last question...I need help finding a 1 minute comedic monologue for the music man! :)
CCM knows what they're talking about. Check it out.

I am auditioning for West Side Story in the Spring. I'm thinking about singing "Being Alive". What do you think? And also, what is the exact range for the songs, and Tony if you know. Not that I'm expecting at all to get Tony, but might as well shoot high.
did you check out stageagent.com?
i'm looking for a short monologue for a college audition. it just needs to be close to my age-17. for the audition i have to sing 2 songs, one with an 8 bar dance and have a short monologue all of which must be within 4 minutes!! ahh! any ideas?
i read a question earlier (this may not be relevant anymore), it was about playing ages in songs/monologues for auditions.
Basically if you are auditioning for a Drama College, they want to see who you can play NOW. Not who you would be really good at playing in thirty or so years cus you were good at it in high school.
What use is that when you finish and want work?
You will never get a 54 (or 34 for that matter)year olds part at only 21/22 etc, because funnily enough, they already have plenty of people who ARE 54.
They are looking for your potential to get a job when you leave, you're not helping yourself if you play something you simply are'nt.
If your style is mature then go for a song meant for someone no older than 30.
I still say take a monologue close to your own age.
Take care all

Heya also someone asked about doing The Story Goes On as an audition song.
Now i absoloutely LOVE that song, so if you are allowed to sing the full length, by all means, go ahead.
But, if you have to cut it, i would advise against it as this gets rid of the emotional journey which essentially is what the song is about.
Learn it and save it for a showcase I say :)

(feel free to ignore anything i say - at the end of the day it's up to you, know what i mean)
bye :)

Hello :]
I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me out.
Im looking for a song to Audition with for little shop of horors. Im a Mezzo Soprano. Uhm Yeah, thank you.
There are a ton of audition stuff on the student board, you can check there too.
SO, I have an audition for The Spitfire Grill musical...and it's at my school, and so the "casting people" are my voice teacher/acting coach, etc, so they already know my strengths and weakenesses...BUT they really do cast based on how good your audition was.
I was thinking about singing "goodbye until tomorrow" (I have to review the sheet music though so maybe not) or "here I am"....does that sound crazy?
I also need some kind of more classical sounding, soprano-y song for a scholarship choir we have at my school...any suggestions on good classical mt songs?
p.s. my range is the E below middle C to the C two octaves above middle C (I completely forgot the cool lower case/upper case numbering thing for range-sorry!)

Are songs from The Last Five Years good to use at auditions or are they overdone?

Not only are they becoming overdone but the accompaniments are absolutely torturous for audition accompanists to sight-read. You definitely run the risk of your audition being totally ruined by an accompanist who butchers your song.
2 years ago, I auditioned for Sheridan College in Ontario. My teacher and I decided to not be "conventional" and do some fairly "underrated" audition songs. I did 'Sara Lee' by Kander & Ebb and "I Don't Care Much" from Cabaret. I didn't get in. When I followed up with the program director, he said they loved my voice but perhaps my choices were a little off - that and my dance portion sucked ass, but nevermind that. Anyway, last year I applied again and got their suggestions up front: "Les Miz", "Jekyll and Hyde", "Scarlet Pimpernel", etc. Everything I avoided was what they wanted. Needless to say, I didn't attend my audition and I am now majoring in Acting and I couldn't be happier.
