I tagged Leslie Kritzer mainly for her Evita that we did together many years ago in summer stock, though she has since proven herself even more with the Papermill Funny Girl and her Patti LuPone at Les Mouches concert.

Interesting that we got this far in a thread about belters without mentioning Idina Menzel. Has her name become that big of a dirty word around here? Or did it I skim too quickly?
And the mention of Whitney Houston in the first post is downright bizarre; there are a lot of belty pop singers that will go without mentioning because it is a Broadway board, yes?
You have to keep your eyes open for Farah Alvin. SHe's in the new cast of "The Marvelous Wonderettes".
I hope she gets to belt in the show, because she belts up to a high E and it's fantastic!

LaChanze!!! My goodness, she has probably one of my favorite voices on Broadway.

Once Kate Shindle and Leslie Kritzer. I haven't heard much of Leslie outside of Blonde and A Catered Affair but on the Legally BLonde CD you can hear her belting like crazy, a standout in that cast

Any person I was gonna name has already been listed haha but I'm surprised no one's said Kerry Butler, also after hearing Kerry Ellis in bryant park I'd say she'd make the list as well

I can't believe no one's said Rachel York yet.
Lisa Bresica has a gorgeous belt as well.

Since pop singers like Whitney Houston have already been included, I feel obligated to mention Marilyn McCoo, the lead vocalist of the pop-soul group, The Fifth Dimension, who gave a stunning performance as the tragic Julie in the 1994 revival of Show Boat and Petula Clark, a superb pop singer who appeared in the films of Finian’s Rainbow & Goodbye Mr. Chips and on Broadway in Blood Brothers. McCoo’s stirring vocal of Laura Nyro’s “Wedding Bell Blues” and heartfelt rendition of “One Less Bell to Answer” (which was deservedly a bigger hit than Streisand’s version) and Clark’s beautiful performance of “You and I” in Goodbye Mr. Chips are not only examples of great singing at its best but solidify Marilyn McCoo and Petula Clark’s place among the great belt voices and it goes without saying that both are arguably two of the greatest female singers of the 20th. Century.

I'm all about Idina Menzel!! As Seth would say IMO she's AMAHZING! I also really like Kerry Ellis, Kate Shindle, Saycon Sengbloh, Sho Bean, Andrea Mcardle and Sutton Foster. And for the love of God how is it that no one mentioned (at least that I saw) ORFEH!!?!!!

I didn't mean that it should just be Broadway people. I listed Vestal Goodman who was the Ethel Merman of Gospel music.
In that case, Mahalia Jackson, if no one's mentioned her yet.
Though as you get into less defined areas, there's some overlap with other vocal types.
Top belter of all time-Cyndi Lauper. If you need proof, listen to her first album, Blue Angel, when she was 17.
This isn't OT, as she appeared on Broadway.
Orfeh's an obvious answer as are the already mentioned Sara Ramirez, Sherie Rene Scott and like her sound or not, Eden Espinosa is definitely one.
Jane2, while I couldn't disagree more about Lauper being the all-time belter, you're so right about her voice. I had no idea until I listened to her recent album of standards, "At Last."
Amazing!

Reggie, if you listen to "Blue Angel", you will change your mind, lol!
So who would you name as the best belter?
Jane2, I'll definitely give a listen. Do you know the "At Last" album?
I don't think anyone can say So-and-So is the best anything. Well, they can, but it just starts an argument.
Of course, I have my favorite.

Yes, I know the "AT Last" album. The Blue Angel is totally,, 100% belting! You can't believe the pipes on that girl. I don't even know if you can get your hands on it at this point. Remember, she was 17!
So...stop being coy, who's your favorite?
Wow! Well, now I HAVE to find "Blue Angel"!!! I nearly fell over when I heard what was coming out of her on "At Last."
My favorite is LuPone.
