Hugh Jackman is involved in three movie musicals for Disney.

http://www.moviemusicals.net/status.html

Perhaps THE BOY FROM OZ is one of them, but I doubt it.

These are fans who just want a movie made and the show released to DVD. Nothing official...yet...

For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

There was talk of a movie when the show closed last year (I remember reading about it on some movie sites and also at Playbill.com). It was never recorded as far as we know for public release. There was also a petition given to the producers for a DVD of the show and apparently they told the fans that there would be one - but never giving specifics of how, where, when, etc.

The fans on the BFO message board did up their own "cast list" in case a movie was ever made. At the theater renaming a few weeks ago, one of them gave the list to Hugh. Hugh mentioned it to this reporter, and this reporter contacted a few of them on the BFO message board and that's how this story happened.

Also, next year Hugh is doing an arena production in Sydney and Melbourne - maybe that's how the DVD will come about, who knows.

HUGH Jackman will tread the boards in Melbourne again next year.

Jackman, who made his mark on stage here in Beauty and the Beast and Sunset Boulevard, will recreate his Tony Award-winning role of Peter Allen in an arena production of The Boy from Oz mid-year.<<<

One of the woman leading the petition also said that a she ran into a producer of the show on closing night. She stated the producer informed her that "she got [her] wish" and that the show was going to be released onto DVD.

Later we learned the woman lied and no DVD release was ever planned - merely considered.

SEEMS to me like she has some mental issues...

...either that or she REALLY REALLY REALLY wants this DVD...(even though bootlegs are out there).

Excuse me, Capnhook, but I happen to BE the woman that started the petition.

First of all, you should check your facts before you make potentially slandderous statements (that I lied or that I have mental problems).

The producers have said a DVD will happen, but no concrete timeline has been given. Costs to record the show in NY were probably too expensive and I would not be surprised if a DVD were to come of the upcoming arena tour in Australia (where production costs are no doubt lower than in NY).

Additionally, I would like to state that my efforts were and are not associated with the "Ozalots Productions" mentioned in the Newsweek article.

Actually when I heard he was going to be doing the show in Australia I thought it would be an ideal opportunity to film it for a DVD. I hope it happens.

There has never been any concrete evidence that a DVD has been made, but information has been told that the show was recorded and could go out for public release. That is what we are all waiting for, and I would just like to say... as an OZALOT speaking, I do not agree with t

Once Upon A Mattress
Filming of this TV musical has completed and shall air on ABC in late 2005.

The cast includes Tracey Ullman (Princess Winnifred), Carol Burnett (Queen Aggravain), Matthew Morrison (Sir Henry), Denis O'Hare (Prince Dauntless), Zooey Deschanel (Lady Larkin), Tommy Smothers (King Sextimus), Michael Boatman (Jester), and Edward Hibbert (The Wizard). YAY FOR MATTHEW MORRISON

And I swear, if they make a movie musical and Anne Hathaway is in it... I will be super mad. I want the originals, which I know won't happen, but NOT Anne Hathaway or Emmy Rossum or other lame-os that can't sing do NOT deserve to be alongside of Hugh Jackman. I am actually hoping that just a Broadway recorded version comes out, because I do not want to see TBFO without the original cast members... oh vey

Lizzy,

I apologize. I didn't mean my "mental" comment to be taken seriously, but re-reading, that is how is was presented. I was watching LAW & ORDER: SVU at the time and perhaps became a tad paranoid.

Apology accepted, Cap'n. :)

Today has been a rough one for me and I'm probably being a bit sensitive.

Regards and good luck with the Rosie petition. :)

A DVD release would be fine but I think turning the show into a movie musical would be a mistake. Jackman's energy was the driving force of that show and I don't think it could be recaptured on film. I do, however, like the idea of Eric McCormack as Peter's lover. Has anybody ever seen the episode of W&G where Eric sings "I Honestly Love You" at the piano bar? It's supposed to be embarassing for him but he actually sounds quite lovely.

I would not mind Eric McCormack... I think all of the cast of Will and Grace can sing.

Just not Anne Hathaway or Emmy Rossum or any of those fake "teen Lindsay or Hilary I use synthesizers but I swear I can sing" girls

If there's anyone they need to bring back, it should be Isabel Keating as Judy Garland, because she was completely and totally AMAZING. But honestly, I don't know if I could really see it as a movie...an HBO movie, maybe. I was/am a huge fan of the show, but I don't think it would transfer well to screen.

Not today, Geraldine.

If the Australian arena tour is recorded, the cast will most likely include original stars Chrissie Amphlett as Judy and local theatre legend Jill Perryman (FUNNY GIRL, HELLO, DOLLY!) as Peter's mum.

An Australian cast doing a DVD of a show created in Australia about Australians isn't THAT outlandish an idea.

Still, I'm worried about the haste in which this project seems to be coming together. I believe they don't even have a director yet.

Two questions:

1) Would Hugh Jackman reprise the role?

2) Would he be true to Peter Allen for the popcorn crowd. Meaning, would the Van Helsing contingent accept a gay Wolverine.
Now, to me, a huge chunk of the charm of The Boy from OZ, was Jackman's propensity to interact with the audience....so that would be lost.
