re: The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...

Phantom will never close, are you kidding? It has probably made enough money in it's long run to keep it afloat with no attendance. ALW will never let it happen! :O)

Exactly! Will all these closures have any effect on the west end? If so what can we expect to close?

re: The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...

I have a very strong feeling Young Frankenstein will come over and do rather well. It will be budgeted to recoup quickly in the style of The Producers.

I'd bet two bottles of wine on it!

I'm in town tomorrow and I shall be sniffing around for gossip!

re: The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...

Phantom of London, If Phantom can survive Manhattan being a deserted island after 9/11 and still pull through strong then it can survive a few bad weeks at the box office. Yes, it's true that this holiday season it isn't selling as well as it usually does. I did see it on the TKTS booth today. But, it doesn't mean anything. The holiday season in New York is just getting under way and there is still PLENTY of time for things to change for that show and all the shows that are on your list. I am not saying that they will or won't for sure. What I am saying is that you should give the time to see what happens before calling some of them a total wash.

West Side will not be a limited run. I think that some people thought that it would be because the other Laurents show Gypsy was. But, that was because it was only brought back to Broadway due to Lupone and many people knew from the get go that there would be no point in keeping that show open after Lupone left.

re: The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...

I think it would have to be dire for Phantom to close, but the coup is not brilliant this week and if the status quo continues, a decision has to be made, 9/11 was very temporary and affected all shows, but the situation is bleak on Broadway at the moment with shows closing, if it was not for the economic downturn I am certain that the excellent Hairspray would not be going anywhere fast.

West Side Story, I was not aware it was an open run, thought it was 6 months only, but conceding I am maybe wrong. WSS never got the attendance to match its grandeur, everyone says how its the greatest musical of all time and I am not going to argue this point, but when it first debuted at the Winter Garden in 1957, it only run for 732 shows, before touring, then came back to Broadway for 253 shows. WSS notched up over a 1000 performances at Her Majesty's, London

Revivals have been not so kind, in 1964 it only managed 31 performances. Then The Lincoln Center, on June 24, 1968 and closed on September 7, 1968 after 89 performances. Next a Broadway revival opened at the Minskoff Theatre on February 14, 1980 and closed on November 30, 1980, after 333 performances.

Broadway has never been kind to WSS and I cannot see that changing as Broadway is a harsh place for revivals, it has to fill a huge theatre in the present economic conditions, a big hoo-har of Spanish being used (this could work really well, but not proven). Albeit there is a glimmer of hope with the revival of South Pacific, but this is not time proven. If I was offered to become a producer of West Side Story on Broadway I would run like hell.....

New York has to show the love for West Side Story it richly deserves?

re: The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...

I do agree with you that West Side Story hasn't had the best history on Broadway but maybe the Lauren's production could spice it up a bit? Who knows.

While it is true that the 9/11 aftermath on Broadway was temporary no one knew how long it was going to be or how long it would have lasted until after the fact. 9/11 closed a lot of shows on Broadway not all of which were doing bad at the box office. Many of which would have stayed open for a good long while if the tragic events of that day never happened.

Having seen a few shows in the past few days and being in the theatre district I have seen a good number of tourists despite the economic problems going on in my country. It is true that i have seen more US tourists visiting NYC then I have international but as I said earlier the tourist season is still young and there is pleanty of time for that to change and I think it will. I think that the tourist situation is complicated. I don't think that the given financial climate is going to affect tourism. So I think that Phantom will be fine and I think that ticket sales this season will be same old same old and pick up.

re: The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...

'Phantom' wont be going anywhere anytime soon believe me or anyone with connections to RUG. The show is handled beautifully on both sides of the Atlantic with more cash spent on it than you can imagine- the recent installment of a new sound system for example only guarantees its shelf life.
'Young Frankenstein'-sorry, thats 'Frankensteen', however could possibly be packing his bags for London a little sooner than planned. (Despite its recent closure notice-which wasn't as sudden as most people think-it was planned to close in Feb as far back as Sept!)
Its early days but a London production has suddenly become more in focus in the last few weeks. Late 2009 is around the time that the show could see a London opening.

re: The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...

I will bet my left arm that YF never makes it here, and if it does it will be some very very cheap production.

It will have lost money in the states (despite what their people are saying) and reviews sucked for the show. The Producers did OK here but never took off like they expected in London and thats afar better show.It also struggled on Tour except for in Manchester where we had Peter Kay

Having seen WSS at sadlers wells in the summer it was amazing how fresh it felt, if the broadway revival is handled even half as well it should feel the love.

I just cant be sad about that god awful production of Grease, it made the west end one look Tony worthy
Sad for the cast and crew though

re: The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...

'Boeing-Boeing' -gone!
I was really take aback at that announcement as when I was there 2 weeks ago it was doing great business and this was the last thing on their minds- I'm guessing the advance was getting less and less and/or recasting was too expensive.

re: The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...

The Broadway bloodbath continues with the cancellation of Vanities due to the economic climate, due to plat at the Lyceum.

The three cheerleaders of Vanities, who lived through inflation and recession of the 1970s, are now victims of the 21st century economy. The musical by librettist Jack Heifner and composer-lyricist David Kirshenbaum will not arrive on Broadway this winter, after all.

The producers announced Dec. 5 that the Broadway production will be postponed, due to the economic climate.

The show's commercial life will be rescheduled to "later this season" and a new plan is expected to be announced soon.

"We're a victim of history, and the show will go on, and we are regrouping," Frost said

re: The Broadway Bloodbath Continues...

I am not really shocked to be honest with you to hear that Gypsy is closing soon. Yes, it would have been nice for them to wait until March and close at the end of Lupone's contract. But, if you look at the numbers that really isn't something that is possible right now. The numbers would have only gotten worse and worse as the weeks went on from hear to March.
