Not yet, but my family wanted to see it so they got tickets to go this summer and they're taking me along.

i wonder if you'll find the changes benefit the show as so many others have.
i, for one, adored the show, especially miss lachanze. she really deserves recognition for this role, in my opinion, over patti and the others.
She's a gentle siren, enchanting.
Margo, I don't know if you have addressed this in past threads or not, but what's your opinion on LaChanze vs. Patti?

I think Lupone will likely win, but if I were voting I might go for LaChanze.
I don't think LuPone will win.... She is very good in the role but there isn't much to her performance...
I am rooting for LaChanze!
Rooting for LaChanze.
"I heard about that Shug Avery. Who hoochi coochi with who?"
Agree. Patti was great, I just dont think that part is that great. LaChanze is amazing and should win. JMHO
You hush my mouth and still me with a song I've never heard
I guess that means that you are just too beautiful for words...
Oh don't you know you're beautiful, too beautiful for words
Oh Celie you're too beautiful for words
When I lay me down to sleep
I will say my prayer
that God love me so deep
he will promise
our souls to keep together
I'll say our prayer

I loved this piece - it touched me deeply.
At the end, outside the theatre, I approached three Black women in their seventies and asked them what they thought. At once, and in unison, they said, "Beautiful."
And I agree.

I used to be all about Felicia winning the Featured actress (and maybe I still am)...but if Cyndi gets a nomination - I don't know who I'd prefer to win.
I am sort of upset Felicia is leaving to go to Chicago - it would be nice for her to have a Tony Award. Cyndi has Grammy's and such.
But, then again, Cyndi pretty much steals the show and for her five minute song there is nothing better.
And I have always been rooting for LaChanze.
I'm gonna take a deep breath
Gonna hold my head up
Gonna put my shoulders back
And look you straight in the eye
Maybe....

Why do I think anything and anyone involved with Threepenny will get screwed over this year?
And in my happy word, TCP would win Musical and Sweeney, I guess, would win Revival. (Though I'd like to see Threepenny, I guess I will just enjoy my love for it, see it again before it closes, and be content.)

I want to know more about the woman who played Celie's sister. Her singing knocked me out.
And I would order a gospel recording right NOW that featured the woman billed as 'soloist' in the Playbill.
THOSE are voices!!!

Yes! Carol Dennis is fantastic!
I was fortunate to see her early on and she was in great health.
The second time she sounded a little weaker - and she needed rest.
But she is quite amazing.
I'm going have to return to see Darlesia Cearcy.
I'm totally wearing my Color Purple T-shirt for rehearsals today.
I loved Darlesia there was just something about her on stage. You can't take your eyes off of her.
The show is a feast for the eyes and ears.
Oh Celie, you're too beautiful for words.
But what about trust?
What about tenderness?
What about hope?
What about joy?
What about tears when I'm happy?
What about wings when I fall?
I want you to be a story for me that I can believe in forever.
And what about love?

can't wait to see this show! glad you enjoyed it! i just finished listening to the cast recording, and wow! i love it! lachanze really deserves the tony this year! she better win!
and elisabeth withers-mendes is amazing too- my favorite song on the cd is when she sings "the color purple"
i really want this to win best musical!!!
"dear celie, dear celie, dear celie, dear celie (etc!!!)
dear celie
oh i love you
years go by and still you're with me
all we share is one big sky
i pray for your reply..."
:)
This is THE MOST AMAZING NEW MUSICAL on Broadway!! Everyone in the cast is stellar. If LaChanze doesn't win the Tony I will literally cry...she comepletely deserves it.
The costumes, sets, and the show itself are all incredible. GO SEE THIS SHOW!!
I adored TCP just as much as most of you when I saw it. But the LaChanze predictions over Patti Lupone seem a bit unjustified to me. Don't get me wrong, I adored both performances. But, Lupone gives a trumpeted performance, that even her best fans were cautious about. Plus, Lupone has so rarley missed a performance, whereas LaChanze takes a performance off per week - that does not bode well with any Tony Voter. I see LuPone walking away with this one.
Yes, but the Tony awards are about talent, not attendance record.
You try aging 40 years eight times a week; the role is so demanding physically, emotionally, and vocally. How can you blame LaChanze for taking one show off per week?
LaChanze plays Celie effortlessly and with so much passion. Plus she has four kids, lives about 40 minutes from the city, and just lost her husband a few years ago.
Just giver her that damn Tony!

i absolutely loved Color purple. saw it last night... angela robinson played Shug and was fantastic. However, LACHANZE was INCREDIBLE. she was in perfect voice last night... and Felicia was a show stealer.. they both deserve noms, and wins.
Also, for those who don't like the color purple score... i loved it and thought it really worked IN the show.
