The Cult Classic That is IN MY LIFE#1

Okay, maybe that's pushing it, but I can safely say that I still have NO idea what the hell I saw that Saturday afternoon a little over a year ago.
The worst thing in recent memory? Not really. It was entertaining, to say the very least. The "worst thing in recent memory" award goes to Hot Feet.
It was one of the most depressing pieces of theater I've seen in years, yet it had so many *unintentional* laugh-out-loud moments.
I'll never forget the flying death song (which was cut shortly after the early previews.)

Posted: 2/1/07 at 10:36amIt was truly the most awful piece of theater I have ever seen in my entire life...and I am grateful I got to see it four times. Three times in previews and closing night. Brilliantly bad!

Posted: 2/1/07 at 10:49amOne of my biggest regrets as a theatregoer is not having seen this show. *sigh*

Posted: 2/1/07 at 11:00amOne of my biggest regrets as a theatregoer is that I did. And that it got a standing ovation from the entire theatre...

I thought the show was absolutely mind-blowingly brilliant. While I would have changed a few things (like the Mother's song), we did get a few things out of it:
1)An ORIGINAL musical (Minus the jingles). New story, new concept, new music.
2)A musical very close to the writer's vision...he did it all!
3)A great role (Winston! I wanna be Winston!)
4)Something to talk about.

This is by the same composer who did "Metropolis", right? If so, I guess plans for a Broadway production were quashed when this fell apart?

Yes, Joe Brooks wrote METROPOLIS. Fortunately, the whole show was recorded - script and all. Unfortunately, the sound quality is dreadful.
Brooks has said he has been working on it - revising it and such. There are many songs that can and should be cut...but hopefully one day some European producer will take the risk...and a break from Wildhorn.

Posted: 2/1/07 at 1:32pmI too am quite pleased that I got the opportunity to see this (albeit, only once). It was truly...unlike...anything else I've ever seen.
re: The Cult Classic That is IN MY LIFE#11
Posted: 2/1/07 at 5:00pmI wish I could have seen this delightful little oddity. It couldn't have been any worse than the London production of Notre Dame de Paris or Closer to Heaven.
re: The Cult Classic That is IN MY LIFE#12
Posted: 2/1/07 at 5:04pmI actually liked the music from the sampler...but i would not have gone to see it...seemed to bizzare.

I would never call this show 'bad', because, for me, bad equals boring.
This simply was the most bizarre experiences I've ever had in the theatre. To be sure, it was an extraordinary snapshop into the mind of a madman.

Posted: 2/1/07 at 5:11pmI wanted to see this show simply to know what all the fuss was about. Judging from the fact that I can't even find clips on the Site That Must Not Be Named, it says a lot about the quality of the show.

Mattbrain, you must not have searched very hard...
I would have loved to have seen this show.

Posted: 2/1/07 at 5:19pmI really wanted to see that show. I watched the broadway.com segments or whatever they were. Interesting to say the least. I wish I could say I saw the show with the giant lemons.
re: The Cult Classic That is IN MY LIFE#17
Posted: 2/1/07 at 5:31pmI'm with Robbie. For me "bad" is boring, annoying, grating, insulting, offensive and/or difficult to sit through. IN MY LIFE was none of those things. I was thoroughly entertained throughout. It was just the extremely weird, odd, whimsical, warped vision of a single individual who refused to conform to any of the accepted notions of what an American "musical" was supposed to look and sound like. It was extremely well-paced (the direction was frankly better than most of the more acclaimed shows that season) and it actually had its own internal logic which somehow, I think, made sense within its own context. It was very strange and way "out there" and unlike anything the Broadway stage has probably ever seen -- but, given that it was never boring for a moment (more than I can say for a lot of shows that have gotten rave reviews in recent years) and consistently entertaining throughout, I'd never call it a "bad" show.

Mister Matt - you're right, it was still better than Notre Dame and Closer to Heaven...
I should probably rephrase what I said above - I am glad I saw it (if just for the dancing skeletons and Winston), and I'll agree that it was rarely dull (though I saw it towards the end of it's run by which time I understand that several bits had been 'refined'). But it was the vomit-inducing forced emotion of perhaps the most awful and bizzarely played love story of all time, coupled with a score that didn't even try to achieve 'interestingness' - people not only stood for it at the end but glared at me and my girlfriend and made comments because we didn't leap to our feet!! I was all for praising the actors for getting through the evening, but there are limits...

Enjoyed it & found it entertaining
I have seen many turkeys in my time but this was one of the better ones. It had a can't miss subject for musicaliztion - Tourette's Syndrome. So if it wasn't the subject matter, where did it go wrong - ha ha?
Loved Winston & the dancing skeleton
