I caught The Dance of Death at the Lucille Lortel tonight and overall really liked it. It takes a little while to get going, but once it catches fire it's very exciting.
The play is very Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf; a bitter married couple live on an island and thrive on destroying each other every day. When the wife's cousin shows up they turn on him, just like Martha and George toy with their guests.
Laila Robins sinks her teeth into the role of the wife and was my favorite of the three actors. I think it's worth it to go just for her performance alone. Daniel Davis and Derek Smith are good to though.
The pacing needs to pick up in some spots, but I assume they'll work that out. The set and direction are similar to that of The Creditors production that played a few years ago at BAM.
The more I see of Strindberg, the more I like his plays. He really must have shocked his audiences with the way he wrote his female characters.
It was a nice change of pace after all the big Broadway shows to see this tonight.
This was totally not even close to being on my radar, but I may have to check it out!
What was the running time, whizzer?

The actors most definitely say what's on their minds. The woman hates her husband and says she wants him dead. She certainly doesn't mince words. Dark comedy, well acted and quite entertaining. Act 2 is considerably shorter than act 1. Total running time is 2 hours 21 minutes. Recommended.
The run time was long- It started at 7:30 and we were out at 10. Definitely go when you're in the mood for a slow burn.
I really want to see this. I have such great memories of the Helen Mirren/Ian McKellan production and can't wait to see the play done again.
