The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

The Donmar are close to deciding on doing 'Sweet Charity' as its next musical production this autumn.
The Pulitzer Prize 2003 winner, 'Anna In The Tropics' that played Broadway 2003/4 is also on the cards.

Good job you didn't see London's last attempt with Bonnie Langford. Obviously so many of her 'friends didn't want to see her then' it was gone within 3 months.
Yea OK 'Sweet Charity' is an OK show with some great moments but I expect a little more daring from the Donmar.

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

Its not confirmed as I said in the original OP and they dont expect to announce something until March. They have been toying with 'Pippin'.
'Charity' will work very well in the Donmar i think!
Hell! so would 'Pippin'.

aww ive always liked it, though i used to be a dancer so i guess i look at things from a dance point of view, though i do think it has some great songs in.

i think Sweet Charity will be a good fit for the Donmar, and im hopeful they do this! Although just a musical from the Donmar would be nice!

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

Am I the only one who thinks that the success of the Meniers musicals in the last 3 or 4 years has but the Donmars nose a little out of joint?
'Parade' being the exception of course

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

That was a thought i had Mama, but then i was wondering whether they were just doing their bit to bring some plays back in to London, with all the musicals that are taking up theatres...but then again i've always seen the Menier and Donmar to be in slight competition.

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

I don't think Sweet Charity is Donmar material. It may have a great score but the book is boyfriend-then-another-boyfriend-then-another-boyfriend. It doesn't really go anywhere.

I'd much rather see Pippin. When was the last time that had a big London production? And how come the original London production failed - with such a great cast?

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

The Bridewell did a great production of 'Pippin' about 8 or 9 years ago with James Gillan.
I'm still trying to find out why the Donmar lost 'Pippin' and if they do get 'Sweet Charity', what they will do with it.
I wish they would do something new and exciting like 'The Fix' etc.

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

Indeed they are - and they're trying to get DVO as Charity.

I love this show, the score is one my favourites, and think the donmar will do a fantastic job - especially as I think it's show that can be bought right up to date if done right. The Broadway revival was fantastic - but a little bit too light and fluffy. Same as the Donmar did with Cabaret, I think they can highlight the real bittersweet in Sweet Charity.

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

On Denis as Charity, I have two words:
TOO OLD!
I'm sure she could sing it but again :
TOO OLD!
She'd make a better Nickie methinks

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

I'd much sooner see Pippin revived- but retaining the full Fosse aesthetic.

Did anyone else see the Bridewell production about ten years ago? NAME DROP ALERT! I sat with Stephen Schwartz during the show, and he enjoyed it very much. I wasn't so sure about the Play Your Cards Right spoof. However played Bertha (can't remember just know), was fantastic. Am I right in recalling that James Gillan played Pippin?

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

I LOVE Charity but I feel that--unless they do some rewriting and structuring, it's pointless to do without the original brilliant Fosse staging. it was very much written to every one of his ideas and a new version is kinda like doing a new version of Chorus Line--pointless unless there's a brilliant new concept. The awful choreography and staging of the US revival recently proved this.

Pippin was a huge flop in London wasn't it? (odd as it was the same Fosse production)

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

And what a cast it had...

Patricia Hodge
Elizabeth Welch (singing No Time At All)
Paul Jones
Diane Langton (singing Spread a Little Sunshine)

How I wish this had been recorded!

re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'

A friend of mine saw it numerous times and became friendly with Ms Langton and one day they were walking along the Strand when they met someone who was with Hal Prince. They were introduced and chatted and from that meeting Diane got an audition for the West End premier of 'A Little Night Music'!!!
re: The Donmar Goes 'Sweet'
Her performance in that production a year later put her on the musical theatre ladder to fame.
My friend still raves about the production of 'Pippin' to this day.
