Does anyone else think that it's remarkably similar to the one of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, only less funny?
Compare the following paraphrased quotes:
"Fabulous reception in the lobby....for cell phones"
to
"Some musicals have a great title....this one isn't it."
There are more up now, around the theater....anyone agree/disagree? Thoughts?
Well, in the marketer's defense, they have a tough job on their hands. Since it is original they don't have any built in name recognition. And when you see the title, you ask yourself "What's this all about?". So I guess they decided to poke fun at it. I think it's a little different strategy than DRS.
The ONLY reason I went to LA to see this show was the buzz generated on THIS website! Word of mouth and good reviews will be what brings people to this show.
Urinetown predates Dirty Rotten and they had the "What kind of musical is this?" campaign.
Personally I think "Some musicals have great titles. This isn't one of them" bit is stupid.
I read one from across the street that said something like:
"If Noel Coward and Rex Harrison had had sex...."
and that's all I saw. I the "Rex Harrison" part was blurry.
Is that really the poster? Wow. Not good.
Fingers crossed for the show, though. I love me some Sutton.
TT
i was just going to post the same thing munk!
...i didn't know what to think about that sign.

I haven't seen the show, and am looking forward to catching it, but besides the title being awful, what happened to ad campaigns that tell you something about the show? Ah well...

The unique nature of the show is kind of hard to describe and kinda spoils some of the suprises, so I agree it's a tough one to market. Word of mouth surely will help.
BTW: It rocks! Go see it!
I would agree that ad campaigns do more than we can say for a show, but at the same time I think this one's content and popularity could blow everyone else out of the water.
I am so excited.
The show is absolutely wonderful....Unfortunately the advertising is dreadful.
They are going to shoot themselves dead with that marketing campaign. They should be marketing the period style the show emulates. Nobody wants to pay 100 bucks a ticket on something that looks like THAT.
I got a closer look tonight at the poster I was talking about, and this is what it said:
"IF NOEL COWARD
HAD SEX WITH
REX HARRISON
(and we're sure Noel tried),
THIS WOULD BE THEIR BASTARD CHILD."
no, i'm not kidding. I think it's funny. How many tourists know who Noel Coward is, let alone Rex Harrison?
Most tourists probably think Noel Coward is a female contestant on American Idol.

"Yeah, we heard The Pajama Game is sold out."
I like it!!!
It's true, and one of the reasons I am seeing The Drowsy Chaperone in June (besides the good words on BWW).
An excellent article on the history of The Drowsy Chaperone

I'm excited for this show, simply because of what I've read here and on other boards. That being said, I know NOTHING about the show. I have no idea what it's about, but I read the boards, so I'm excited. Joe Schmoe doesn't, and won't have any interest in the show, because he has no idea what it's about. They need a much better campaign than poking fun at the title.
They need to throw all sorts of pastiche, retro, jazz-age images at us and make the show look like a barrel of laughs. This ain't gonna do it.
