Who else would agree that they are...
Gwen Verdon
Elaine Stritch
Carol Channing
Roz Russell
Let me make it clear. My definition of a "nonsinger" is someone who can carry a tune. They don't have a great range or singing technique. They are just able to carry a tune, and really know how to sell a song.
Gwen Verdon in her earlier days had a quite a nice voice. She could belt here and there. If you've heard her solo album, you would know she could really sing. Over the years she started losing her range etc. Then we got the raspy Gwen. Though not an amazing singer, I would say she sang the best out of the 4. Not only could she sell a number, she had UNBELIEVABLE dance skills to back it up.
Come on, can anyone sell a song like Stritch? I really don't think so. Even just listening to her on recording, you get the emotion. You get it all, as if you were there watching her. No one does it like Stritch.
Channing is Channing. Sometimes I can't stand to listen to her. But like Stritch, she can sell a number for all that it's worth.
Now Roz Russell. This woman was great. When she went to work with Bernstein on the score of WONDERFUL TOWN. She had no idea what a harmony was, and he had to teach her all the basics. They made Ruth's songs all very low alto speak-sing songs. Roz's performance in WT it definitely one of the most raved about performances in history. The reviews she got were unbelievable. One critic said "She should just run for president." And having seen the 58 tv movie of WT, the woman could REALLY REALLY sell a number, wow. She had major pitch problems with her GYPSY outtakes, but some weren't that bad. Her parts in ROSE'S TURN are stunningly performed in the movie.
Sorry, that was so long. Anybody have an opinion on these ladies. Would you agree they are the best female nonsingers that graced the stage?
