I'm with you, jv92. I loved it, too. I was actually crying at the end of the third act.
Possible spoiler: I did think the second act could have used a bit more storytelling to set up that the wife is terribly unhappy in her boring marriage, which would then lead her to retreat into her fantasy world with the evil "brick." But as soon as David Hyde Pierce showed up in that act, I was won over.
There were lovely melodies (as always) from John Kander, and it was so nice to see him challenged by his new partner to create a different type of musical--it's VERY different than the Kander and Ebb works.

That was pretty much my reaction to the piece, StageStruckLad (I was tempted to call you Gwen after seeing your avatar LOL). However, I didn't really mind the lack of exposition about the dull marriage in "The Brick" and thought that in such an absurd story, a "Dividing Day"-esque number (even with some comedy and lightness) wouldn't mesh with the tone.
I'm glad I'm not totally alone in loving this show.

Saw this on Sunday and didn't like it. I could appreciate aspects of it but when it was over, I was glad. Not the best reaction. I agree with a lot of what has been written here but when it was over and I realized that I was glad, I knew that the piece just wasn't for me.

LOL, jv92. Happy to answer to "Gwen." I saw her once in Fairway on the Upper West Side and told her that her performance in Chicago was my all-time favorite musical performance. She looked kind of scared at first when I went up to her (maybe she thought I was some crazy fan), but after I said that she smiled and said "Thank you so much" in that wavery voice of hers. A very happy memory.
