The Leads in South Pacific

Has there been any announcement about when the leads Kelli O'Hara, Paulo Szot, Danny Burstein, Loretta Ables Sayre will be in the show until?

re: The Leads in South Pacific

I believe Kelli mentioned in an interview that they would all be there until January 3rd, 2010.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

Kelli O'Hara's website says January 4, 2010. That's a Monday, so unless there is a special performance, her last performance would be January 3, 2010.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

January 3 is the day three shows are closing (not counting the limited runs). Hmmm.... I know there's been some speculation about anothet show eyeing the theatre because of the thrust stage. I've also seen Lincoln Center subscription holders complain about the show running so long and not allowing a new show to come in.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

I would be surprised if SOUTH PACIFIC closed in January. Somebody mentioned somewhere that Laura Osnes has already commented that she is returning to the show in January.

As for the Lincoln Center subscribers complaining; there really isn't any reason for that. LC has in the best simply rented other Broadway houses when the Beaumont is in use.

I would be surprised if WOMEN ON THE VERGE was pushed to open this season. I would think SOUTH PACIFIC will run at least until the summer, when the new season starts

re: The Leads in South Pacific

Unless something has changed, South Pacific isn't closing on Jan. 3, 2010 since Laura Osnes is coming back to be Nellie.

The producers may try to go full out with publicity then to capitalize on her former TV exposure with the Grease reality show.
There wasn't much publicity of her taking over the role while Kelli O'Hara was on maternity leave.

That seems unlikely musicalsFan, aside from the fact that the GREASE reality show is a very distant memory at this point, Osnes definitely wasn't hired for her 'star power.'

SOUTH PACIFIC is the star. Its the name draw. They don't need to push Osnes on the PR wagon...

I missed that. I don't really read any interviews with her so I guess it's not surprising I didn't see that.

And I'm sure she wants to distance herself from it as much as possible

I am not saying the show is closing, but just because someone is expected to return a certain date doesn't necessarily mean the show will be open that long.

I agree to a certain extent, but if the producers do put her out there, there will be a few people who think 'oh, yeah, I remember her from that Grease reality TV show'.

South Pacific is an 'older' show in that it has been around since 2008. There is more competition come spring 2010.

I agree Eris. I don't think she wants anything to do with that promotion anymore. Besides, like Michael Bennett said, "South Pacific" will draw people to the show more than she will.

I heard on her first run at it, during Kelli's maternity leave, that she was quite good.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

I guess we will have to wait and see.

As I said, South Pacific is an older show. Unless the producers do more promotions, it will fade into the background. I personally don't see it going much beyond summer 2010.

The attention will focused on Addams Family and Promises, Promises and the other new rumored shows.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

Having seen both Osnes and O'Hara I cannot say who gave the better performace because their approaches to the role were different. Osnes fit the bill physically a little better for me. We're supposed to believe that Nellie is a young woman who is away from home for the first time. Her youthful appearance sells that idea better a bit better than O'Hara. Not saying O'Hara's an old crone by any means. But she simply appears more worldly. However I definitely felt O'Hara's performance had more nuance that comes from experience as a performer.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

So why did Kelli take a six month maternity leave to come back for what? four months just to leave again? Was she finishing up her contract or something?

Yes.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

I saw Osnes and thought she was excellent. Absolutely radiant. I was so pleasantly blown away by her performance. If she returns, I'd happily see it again (I enjoyed O'Hara a great deal as well, mind you).

"I personally don't see it going much beyond summer 2010."

Oh, well, who can argue with that?
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

re: The Leads in South Pacific

If they loose Szot next year ... I will never come back to see it.

Is Paulo loose? I haven't heard anything about that but I'm sure there are many men who'd like to know the answer to that.

And I'm sure the producers won't be shedding any years when they hear they are going to lose you.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

It's an "older" show? Gee, then why is Phantom still running? Or Mamma Mia? or Lion King?

The current production is stunning. They will run it as long as ticket sales continue.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

Of course SP will continue to run as long as the ticket sales allow it.

I just don't see SP as a show that the tourists are going to keep running indefinitely like The Lion King, Mamma Mia, or Phantom of the Opera.

Maybe they'll run through Thanksgiving 2010. It is my personal *opinion* -- I am not stating fact just *my* opinion -- that it may not stay around that long.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

Sorry folks, I did not have my facts straight earlier. To correct myself:

The show hopes to make it until Labor Day, 2010- not Thanksgiving.

Paulo will extend for a little longer (a few weeks). He will be followed by David Pittsinger. He will stay for a few months, as he has a engagement at the Met in the Spring.

Laura Osnes will return as Nellie.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

I agree with most of what eris said. Laura and Kelli are both excellent in their own rights. My first time seeing it, I saw Laura as Nellie and William Michaels as Emile, and that completely worked for me. They both looked age-appropriate, and you could really gauge what was to be the intended age difference between them. The second time I saw it, I saw Kelli and Paulo, and the age difference all but disappeared. Kelli certainly doesn't look "old", but neither does Paulo. Rather than it being a young woman falling in love with an older man, it felt more like two contemporaries in age but differentiated in experience people falling in love. I think - much as I may love Paulo's voice - particularly with Kelli, William would work better as Emile for that reason alone. (I also loved him. I guess it's that "you never forget your first..." thing since he was my first Emile.)

I'm interested to see how they read to me (Kelli and Paulo as I'm assuming they'll both be in over the Thanksgiving holiday) when I go see it with my parents.

William Michals was in for Paulo this past Friday, and I have to say, he was really phenomenal.
