re: The Leads in South Pacific

David Pittsinger, who has subbed for Paulo on Broadway and Rod Gilfry on tour, is brilliant as Emile. If/when Paulo leaves, they should offer him the role full-time...that is, if he's not too busy with opera.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

David was my first Emile and I thought he was great. I remember people posting about how they were creeped out by the age difference between him and Laura but I didn't feel it was inappropriate at all. In fact I think it added to Nellie's internal struggle beyond the racism.

I'm surprised that people found it inappropriate. I mean, it is explicitly stated in the show that Emile is twice Nellie's age.

I think it was partly because David looks older than Paulo so it made the age divide seem even wider and partly because some people were looking for a reason to hate Laura in the role because of her background.

That's too bad. I thought both Laura and David were brilliant; in fact, I thought Laura got the character way more than Kelli did.

He's still in the show.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

I've seen South Pacific 12 times so far! It's my favorite show!!!!
Kelli and Laura are both wonderful. I also liked Laura-Marie Duncan ( she was funny and a good actress) I loved them all!
But, I have different thoughts about the 3 Emiles:
W. Michaels is a very good cover , that's it! ; the replacement, Pittsinger, is "tense" and a bad actor!!! he sang well but his acting was so fake and superficial.

David with Kelli or Laura sucked, William with Kelli or Laura sucked.
Paulo with Kelli or Laura or Laura-Marie was always brilliant .
that's the difference! and that's worth the admission!

Having seen David I can honestly say he did not "suck". If he "sucked" he wouldn't have gotten the part.

And having seen William, I can honestly say that he did not "suck". I found him amazing and actually enjoyed him more than Paulo if I'm being truly honest.

re: The Leads in South Pacific

I've only seen David Pittsinger as Emile (with Kelli O'Hara as Nellie) and I have to echo the favorable sentiments. I found his performance to be dramatically driven, emotionally honest and beautifully sung, culminating in one of the most devastatingly gorgeous renditions of "This Nearly Was Mine" I've ever experienced - it stopped the show the night I saw it.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

re: The Leads in South Pacific

I've stated numerous times that I cried pretty much beginning to end the first time I saw the show. David's "This Nearly Was Mine" was glorious. The second time I saw it I had Paulo/Laura and I honestly thought the audience was going to run up on stage after "This Nearly Was Mine". That is how much love Paulo was getting from the audience. I'm truly shocked that there wasn't a mid-show standing ovation. I was sitting in the very front row that night and was temped to start it but felt a little self conscious. If I had been sitting further back I might have.

I saw this with the original cast. But I am anxious to go back and see it again. It is an absolutely stunning production!!!

Isn't Laura doing Bonnie and Clyde right now?
