The film was just on TCM this past Sunday afternoon. They have run it a few times.
George Hamilton plays the Italian boy and you can see why he was a big deal when he was young.
The mother realizes that in this big close knit family, with servants etc, her daughter will have a better life than back home in an institution. I can't remember from the musical, but in the film the father is making plans to place her in a home upon their return Italy.
