A theatre not too far from where I live is getting some tour shows including The Lion King (along with Hair, Young Frankenstein, and a couple of other shows) and depending on the casting for Hair, that and The Lion King are really the only two I'd be interested in seeing.
When I saw The Lion King the main appeal of it for me was the stunning set (and costumes). To what level do they manage to keep that at all on tour? I'd imagine it'd be difficult.
I saw the Lion King twice - once back in 2007 and once a couple of months ago. So I don't really remember if there are any differences.
All I can say is, I wasn't underwhelmed with the sets and costumes on tour. I don't think there were any major changes. If there was anything, I didn't notice.

I just saw the tour in Philly a few weeks ago, as well as the Broadway production many years ago. The only main difference is that the tour is quite downscaled. As for the stage being smaller, there is no "elevator system" and pride rock and the elephant graveyard is on a track from backstage instead of underneath. Costumes/props/setting is all the same with minor changes. Still the same show, loved every minute of it. Very enjoyable.
Can't wait to see the tour when it comes to New Orleans for a 5-week run in late 2011!
When I saw The Lion King in Minneapolis, Pride Rock came out of the floor still. It like, revolves or spirals up from the ground, I have to imagine that's similar to Broadway?
I saw Lion King when it returned to Philly in March after seeing it 4 years prior, and the only real difference between the tour and broadway was that Pride Rock slid in from stage right, and it didn't come up on a riser
Definitely see it, its a spectacle that everyone can enjoy
I had a friend on the Lion King tour and it is basically the same production.
