The Next Broadway Divas?

Shoshana Bean.
She's already VERY into herself and she's only had one leading role on broadway. I'll never forget seeing Tarzan and then after she was standing on the street waiting for Jenn Gambatese. My friends and I recognized her so we went up to her and she completely blew us off.
I hope she isn't become that well known, but she already thinks her **** doesn't stink.

I think that's what separates a DIVA from someone you like? or a DIVA to a very talented person?
LARGER THAN LIFE & LEGENDARY!

Posted: 11/26/08 at 10:07amI second what JayStarr says. Longevity is another key. These girls today aren't being written the material that previous generations got. LBB busted her hump in Legally Blonde and really showed her stuff, but it is an unmemorable show at the end of the day with no standards coming from it. Originating a new standard in a show helps get you some status, so Idina might have a chance. Too bad the demographic for WICKED is a lot of teen girls.

I still dont know if they write materials specifically for a DIVA? Probably the last is GREY GARDENS which really did not earn a lot of money, unfortunately! Composers I can think of writting in the style specifically for a DIVA are Kander & Ebb and Jerry Herman.
Of course~that's what makes Merman a Diva- she reinvents her role into a LARGER THAN LIFE status. So does Patti in the recent LuPONE GYSPY.
Someone mentioned that it a thing on a past- might be TRUE!
No pun intended but when people mentioned so and so are divas (meaning young performers on Broadway) Its like saying Britney Spears and Beyonce or Miley Cyrus are DIVAS (of Pop Music) ~same level with Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday or Dinah Washington- I dont think we EQUATE these stars with those names! Again the keywords are LONGEVITY and LEGENDARY!

Posted: 11/26/08 at 10:17amI think once Autumn Hurlbert is in a few shows, she will shoot to Diva status... she has all the qualities just, needs to be more known

Posted: 11/26/08 at 12:43pmAfter seeing Tonya Pinkins in Caroline or Change I thought she could be one of the next divas. But we haven't seen her on Broadway since.

Posted: 11/26/08 at 1:35pmIMHO, in this day and age, the only divas are going to be ones that cross over multiple media (TV, Movies, Music AND Stage) and are well known and respected across them all. Juicy stories to pump up their notoriety will also probably be needed. Cheno can probably fit the bill if she keeps diversifying. The thing is Broadway isn't what it was years ago and movies/TV are what so many stars are reaching for because of the massive fortunes that can come from those professions. Talented performers who go from b'way, cross over SUCCESSFULLY to movies/TV and come back to b'way periodically are going to be the best ones to reach a 'diva' stature.

I agree with lesmis on Carolee!
And also, if we're talking about youth: why not Jill Paice!? Two starring roles on the West End, two on Broadway...and more to come!
