Posted: 7/4/03 at 8:39amMany years ago Forrest and Wright did a fine version of ANASTASIA for Broadway. Is was called ANYA and starred Constance Towers and Lillian Gish. I believe Michael Kermoyan was also in the cast. The music was adapted from Tchiakovsky's themes and was really quite good. The show never caught on, though and closed much too quickly.

If you got a serious book writer completely redoing the script (e.g., removing the silly villain Rasputin) and Ahrens & Flaherty expanding and revising the brilliant score, with the right director and the right cast, it could certainly work. (To use a knee-jerk reaction of late, think of Jessica Grové as Anya.) It'd have to be quite distinct from the film, but it really does merit discussion - especially considering that it credits a stage play by Arthur Laurents as its inspiration in the first place.

Posted: 7/4/03 at 6:53pmI am currently playing Shenzi in the German production of The Lion King. I have seen the Berlin production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame with two extremely talented casts. The show was scheduled to make its Bway debut in the Winter Garden theater, starring Drew Sarrich as Quasimodo.Due to internal politics,it was cancelled. The Berlin theater public is indeed a very difficult one to appease. On the other hand, the New York theater public is really a very supportive one. Personally, I think that it would be an excellent move to produce Hercules on the Bway stage.
