Does anybody know whats going on in this song? I can't seem to figure it out! I know that they're on a boat, but what are they looking at in the beginning when Jamie sings:
"No, that one's Jerry Seinfeld
That one's John Lennon there
No, the Dakota
The San Remo is up a few blocks
Have you been inside the Museum?
We should go
Meet the dinosaurs"
Thanks for your help!
Aren't they the buildings that the celebrities live in that he's pointing out to her. She sings at the end "Is that one John Lennon" implying his apt/condo where he was killed and it's tied with the beginning of "No that one's Jerry Seinfeld..." But I could be mistaken...it's been a while since I saw the show.
Cheers,
Christopher
Christopher's correct. Jamie is pointing out celebrity's houses to Cathy. Seeing as how Cathy's story is going backwards she asks the questions at the end, and he's answering them at the beginning.

Oh! Well that's just plain brillant then. I've been listening to the show for like 2 yrs and I never got that she was asking the questions to the answers he gave in the begining. Damn that JRB! Where are they at? Like some lake in california or something?

They're in a boat on the lake in Central Park, looking at the building on the West Side. In addition to Jerry Seinfeld and John Lennon's apartments, they also make reference to the Museum of Natural History (the dinosaurs).
I was never sure which side of the park it was on; I'm not all that familiar with the west side; my family lives on the east and I usually am only there to sleep when I visit. But I think JRB was extremely brilliant in the story line with the way that the answers are from jamie and cathy is asking them later...I really love the way that this musical is formed.

this is by far my favorite song in the show because the lyrics are soo gentle and the music fits perfectly with the emotion but it doesn't feel forced...it is a PERFECT song

I love it and all, but "I want to bear your child" makes me cringe every time.

The "bear your child" line makes me cringe too. Something about the wording makes it seem over the top. Even though I know it is something nonsexual (it's a vote of confidence for Jamie) it's a bit too much.

I thought that line is one of the greatest lines in that song. I want to be your wife, i want to bear your child, i want to die knowing i had a long full life in your arms. (maybe it is my girliness) but i love that line.

Best lyric in the song, totally making up for cringeworthy-ness of previous lyrics:
"Till there's no one left who has ever known us apart"
I think it's one of the best songs in the show. It's basically the exact middle of the show -- half way through the song, when they both sing, that's the ONLY time they're in the same place. And that same place is being in love with each other. The song is beauitful, but you realize how painful and tragic it is when you remember how it all ends.

Honestly, about the bear your child lines, I think it matters who sings it.
I've heard it sound sincere and almost heartbreaking because of my knowledge of the utter demise. But when some sing it I roll my eyes. It all depends on how the actor has taken on the character.
For example, Sherie's meek voice does make it laughable. Just a little bit. Like a little kid begging for a baby herself. My two cents!!!! Take it for what it's worth.
AND to be clear, I LOVE SHERIE and everything she does, so I'm not trying to bash her at all.

this is my favorite cast recording ever.
and marshmallow, that's my favorite line too
I just saw a production in Chicago two weeks ago and the actress playing Cathy was BRILLIANT and not "cringe-worthy" at all. I actually think its a very powerful line.

which line tells us they're in a boat? I always missed that. And the production I saw didn't have them in a boat, hmm.

I don't think there is a line that gives that away. but that is how Daisy Prince staged it off-broadway.

They don't necessarily have to be in a boat, but the lyrics set them inside Central Park. They could really be anywhere in that general vicinity, I'd think.
Don't you recall all the Norbert fans snickering at that part because they were in a boat, as they were in Thou Shalt Not?
There's nothing in the script (having worked on the show) about it taking place in a boat. It may have orginally been staged like that, however, it's up to interruptation.

The script that MTI sends out states clearly at the top of Scene 8:
JAMIE on a boat on the lake in Central Park, pointing to the apartment buildings on the Upper West Side.
Sorry, guys, it's not remotely up to interpretation. It's right there on page 18.
