as in politics, the public need to connect with a show, that is why we have so many film to stage theatre events. It is already a known commodity in the public's conscience. A few "star" names and the producers hope to see the box office bubbling along nicely. Given the economic climate the public will scrutinise the product very carefully before parting with their money.

Spring Awakening just failed to capture the public's immagination. It should have extended its run (if that were possible) at the Lyric Hammersmith rather than have gone for a big commercial run. Once again, this is an example of what works in the States doesn't always transfer well over here.

It also didn't help, in my opinion, that SA was a self-indulgently written crap show.

Well we're all entitled to our opinion... please feel free to send me a postcard from the theatre of 1945 :)

I just want to add something in response to the title of the thread. That if you guys in London think that your going to have a hit with the awful production of Cat (and that is putting it very nicely) then I fear that you guys are very desperate to have a hit in The Novello.

I mean, I can't say I blame you for wanting a hit there. Hell, there are people like me who on Broadway love The Circle In The Square theatre, but prior to the opening of The Old Vic's Norman Conquests it has't had a show there since Spelling Bee. It is a great theatre and a bit of an aqward space (which is why I think that producers have been avoiding using it) but with the right director it can be used to thier advantage.

but a theatre doesn't come more traditional than the Novello!
Capacity wise.
Stage wise.
Its a perfect West End house for plays or musicals.

I really liked the Novello. Thought it was a smart theatre and very traditional as you say. Didn't look shabby when i went in. Not like the Phoenix... someone give Gok a call for that beast :p

On the surface, it looks like two great decisions have been made to follow SA... a September opening of An Inspector Calls is just inspired. Cat on a Hot Tin roof should be a success over here. I reckon James Earl Jones is a big enough name to get people interested, but I think the fact that it's an all black cast is what will swing it. It's got a ready made audience. I reckon an all black production of any show will pack audiences in, initially at least, but I think the fact that it's a well known, classic play will help. I'm not sure what reviewers will think though. I'm hoping to go on press night, if only to catch a glimpse of Debbie Allen... I bloody love Fame. The TV series that is.
