re: The Official Poll: Webber or Sondheim...who is better?

Um...

SONDHEIM

no question.
"No two shows are alike in the making. Each show is a living piece of your life in a small unreal world with its own character and integrity; its own new set of memorable experiences and incredible happenings. You begin to love and adapt to its strangeness. Dreams harden into substance. Values come into focus. You wish it would never end. The dream world vanishes like mist before a rising sun; part of you vanishes with it. And back you land in the real world with a thud- fogged, uneasy, jittery, difficult to get along with. There is only one cure. A new show. A new, small unreal world; new visions, experiences, incredible happenings. Again you love it, adapt to it, wish it would never end. But end it does. Another part of you vanishes. That's show business."-Anonymous

1. There have been many threads on this.
2. I don't think you can ask, nor anyone here can definitively say who is 'better,' although you could ask who people prefer.

re: The Official Poll: Webber or Sondheim...who is better?

I'm not sure if I find one better than the other, but I did overhear this conversation between the two one night as they were dining together at Sardi's:

ALW: Anything you can do, I can do better. I can do anything better than you.
SS: No, you can't.
ALW: Yes, I can.
SS: No, you can't.
ALW: Yes, I can.
SS: No, you can't!
ALW: Yes, I can! Yes, I can!
SS: Anything you can be, I can be greater. Sooner or later, I'm greater than you.
ALW: No, you're not.
SS: Yes, I am.
ALW: No, you're not.
SS: Yes, I am.
ALW: No, you're not!
SS: Yes, I am! Yes, I am!

It was at this point that I had to leave, but if I recall, the two got into a shoving match, and as I was walking out the door, I noticed that Sondheim had Lloyd Webber in a headlock and was giving him noogies. The wait staff was trying their best to get the two to calm down.

Webber is more accessible because his music is simpler.

"Better" is subjective, of course. And I'm not saying that Sondheim's style, with it's many, many lyrics and less-than-easily-hummable melodies, is my favorite.

Personally, I find Sondheim's music to be much more intellectually stimulating and, in the end, far more rewarding.

Listening to Webber's music makes my brain feel sluggish.

Sondheim...looks like he's winning...Wanna update your poll?
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

SONDHEIM! I jsut stated in a previous post that i like ALW's music, but Sondheim questions and performs was is considered inapropriate and questions the mind and gets the audience to feel something. Like he said in the pbs documentary for Sweeney Todd, which is my favorite of his shows, he creates that rumble in the beiginning to create the mood.
