I finally saw it last night.

It was pretty good. I thought Ricki Lake was really good! It was sad to see Sonny Bono. It had a lot of famous people in it. Odd to see a young Vitamin C as Amber. Divine was really good, shame he died shortly after that.

I'm not usually crazy about these fluffy 80's movies. But I feel without a doubt the musical improved on the story & characters A LOT. I enjoyed the musical a lot more, but it was great to see the original source of material for the musical. It'll be interesting to see the new Hairspray Movie Musical.

So, what do you guys think about the Hairspray movie?

I had no idea that was Vitamin C as "Amber".
I have to re-watch this film.
I haven't seen it in years but it's most def one of my favorite flicks.

Having seen the show first, I did enjoy the movie a lot. I have observed, both with Hairspray and The Producers, that a pretty darn good movie got turned into an even better stage musical, with improved characters, dialogue, and more musical numbers (aka expanding the "Springtime" segment and adding all of those glorious songs from Hairspray--"What gives a girl power and punch, is it charm, is it poise? No, it's Hairspray!") :)

I love the movie. My dad really likes it, because he's odd like that, so I grew up watching it. With the show, I bought the cast recording first and decided I liked it enough to go and see it next time I was in NY. It was even better than I expected, and even though I was leary about Harvey Fierstein as Edna (I thought no one could do a better job than Divine), he was wonderful to watch. I agree with rose&lark; a good movie was turned into an even better musical.

Not today, Geraldine.

I love both versions of Hairpsray. For some reason, I thought that I wouldn't like either, but I was completely won over by the musical. I have the DVD, so I've seen the movie multiple times. I'd say it helps me get my fix when I can't go the show, but I also like the movie in its own right.

I will say that if anyone from the original movie deserves to be in the movie-musical remake, it should be Debbie Harry as Velma. ((But I'm a huge Blondie fan, so that's probably why.))

I love the original movie and if it weren't for my love of it, and the amazing performance at the Tony's, I wouldn't ever think to listen to the musical.

I love this movie. I used to watch it almost every time it's on TV because my parents wouldn't get me the DVD (they think Divine is creepy). When the musical first came out, I wanted to hate it for a long time, just because it would only pale in comparison. I did eventually get over it.

I had no idea Vitamin C was Amber. That's so weird. And her real name is Colleen Fitzpatrick? How boring.

This film has been a favorite since I saw it in the Theater! Love the cast, Divine was, well - Divine, and it worked! I love the soundtrack to the film as well, I recall doing a musical back in 1991 and would have the whole cast join me onstage a few hours before curtain and we would all do "The Madison" (I taught them all the moves and they were addicted!) - sometimes we would all stay a tad late after the show and have the house crew pump in "The Madison" again and there we would all be, just having a ball!! Little did ANY of us think then that "Hairspray" would one day be it's own musical, And I DO Love the Musical too! Anyone hear if Travolta is still going to play Edna in the new film???

I disagree. I think the movie is more developed than the musical. The musical I love (as the lottery ushers will attest), but the whole plot seems rushed and disjointed. But that certainly doesn't stop me from going to see it over and over! I think the musical is more fun than the original movie, but I love the movie!

The Producers, on the otherhand, I think, works much better as a musical.

I know that I will get yelled at for this but I found the movie to be superior to the stage version.
