The Pillowman love

Posted: 2/12/06 at 7:05pmI did think the intermission was an awfully long time coming. It was 95 minutes, which is longer than the whole of Doubt.

pop - It was long.
But I think it's because of all the stories...and the "scary" part.
But both acts, from the beginning, are so entertaining.
I saw it the first time right before I went for school. Two weeks later, or so, it was closing...so I went back home and saw it again!

This is by far the most thrilling expierience I have ever had in a theatre. That first story of Katurian's Childhood scared me to the bone. I had my hands over my eyes in a way that I could still see, but I felt almost sheltered from it. It made me have that feeling that I didn't want to watch, but deep dowm I did. Truly a frightening expierience. Also, I thought it was pretty brilliant that the beginning of the second act was totally different than the end of the first act. I was expecting to be freaked out again, but in the end I was laughing. A genius decision by the playright.
Not to ramble on or anything, but I also had tears in my eyes when Katurian told the story of the Pillowman visiting his brother. A perfect ending to a perfect play.
P.S. I'm trying to muster up the courage to ask my theatre director to let me direct a production of this.

HA!
I got lucky to be able to direct some of it.
I have been doing a lot of rsearch - I love the reference of Katurian's home address!
Anyway, do we think his initials mean anything - KKK. I don't know.

I don't have my Playbill anymore, but here's the cast as I remember it:
Katurian - Rick Sears
Ariel - David Rainey
Topolski - John Tyson
Michal - Jeffrey Bean
Little girl - Elizabeth Bunch
Parents - ????
Rainey, Tyson, and Bean are all members of the Alley resident company. Elizabeth Bunch has appeared there quite a bit the last 2 years most notably as the lead in Proof. Rick Sears last appeared at the Alley in Long Days Journey into Night with Ellen Burstyn.
Many people around the country may know David Rainey from the production of Topdog/Underdog the Alley co-produced with Steppenwolf in Chicago. That production played Houston, Chicago, Hartford, Dallas and several other cities.
Jeffrey Bean was in the revival of Bells are Ringing on Broadway a few years back.
I hope I got all my spellings and details right. This information may give the non-Houston folks a frame of reference for this production.
