EDIT - lets just make this a post about the pillowman lol any production
I just saw the show at the Alley theater and it was awesome. Did anyone see it or hear about it?
It was the first show that actaully scared me after the story "the writer and the writers brother." Was it on a arena stage in broadway?

I saw it last Sunday, and I thought it was brilliant. The Houston Chronicle critic said the performances were every bit as good as the original Broadway cast, and I believe him. I've been an Alley subscriber for several years, so I see the resident company a lot. Jeffrey Bean and john Tyson have never given better performances.
I'm a big fan of the Arena Stage at the Alley. They are very creative in using the space especially since they renovated it after tropical storm Allison. I am very pleased that they put shows on the small stage based on artistic reasons even if it means losing out on some ticket sales.
Anyone who can get to this production should do so.

i was there last sunday too, it just took me awhile to get on here. I was on row A and i thought id feel awkward but their acting was superb. I loved the very small set and the use of the walls.
I had heard recently that the alley had lost its talent and was a waste, but after seeing the pillowman i thoroughly disagree

Loved it. Never saw so much tension like that before of that kind in a theater. It wasn't dramatic tension where the angry lover discovered a secret and you know how their confrontation will be thrilling. It wasn't a "Mrs. Muller tension" where theres a startling almost revelation.
It was tense with Fear. Big time. Everytime that back wall opened up after the electrocution stuff, I was ready to close my eyes. It was just creepy for me to experience an emotion that uncommon to me at a play, I LOVED it. Something all the more special for this brilliant show. Plus, MAJOR fan following=happiness

Posted: 2/12/06 at 1:11amI LOOOOVVVEEEED this play!! I put off seeing it the whole time it was on Broadway and when I finally went to see it it was the very last weekend it was playing. I am sooo sorry now that I put it off because I definitely would have gone back multiple times because I was just so blown away by the story and the actors. It is by far one of the best plays I have ever seen. I wish I could see it again.

Posted: 2/12/06 at 3:13amIf you are the sort of person who goes to the theater to feel something and to be actively engaged (I really believe strongly in this), then The Pillowman is one terribly important modern play. It's easy enough to sell a cliche story to an audience and make them sniffle a few tears. What's hard is to scare an audience AND challenge them and make them think while you're doing it, AND tell a great story with great dialogue. The Pillowman is an incredible play and Martin McDonaugh is just a damn important newish voice. He's not just a shock jock.

Posted: 2/12/06 at 8:43amYup- me too. Pillowman was so much for intense and creative (in my opinion). I love The Pillowman so much! Saw it in NYC over the summer w/ Billy and Jeff. It was someof the greatest acting I have seen in a play. Billy totally deserved the Tony.

Posted: 2/12/06 at 9:24amI saw it over the summer and it was one of the highlights of all the shows i saw (which was close to16!) THe play was an emotional rollercoaster and i know it sounds cliche but it was! I just remember feeling happy and than all of a sudden scared or sad.

Posted: 2/12/06 at 12:36pmAgree that Doubt's presence completely eclipsed the wonderful play that was Pillowman. Any other year, Pillowman would have walked away with every Tony award for new play/acting. Truly unfortunate timing. Because, for me, while Doubt is a fantastic play that addresses many distinctly american hot topics, Pillowman is a genius piece of theatre that actively engages an audience and pulls them in in no other way I've ever seen a play do. I never thought that theatre could be truly scary until I saw it. Did anyone here know that it was actually written by McDonough years ago? One of his earliest works.

it would be interesting to see how they could have staged the apple story. The one where the dad dies from the apples. Then they kill the little girl
that would have been truley frightening to see

Posted: 2/12/06 at 2:42pmI saw The Pillowman quite a few times during its Broadway run, and there is no play that I have ever seen or read which I believe can remotely touch the genius of that show. The Broadway cast was perfection. For me, one of the highlights was being able to meet McDonough after the closing performance. The show should have run for years.

One of the reviews in Houston noted that the Alley did the 3 act version with 2 intermissions, but on Broadway it was 2 acts. Where did the intermission fall in the Broadway version? I liked the 3 acts and thought the intermissions came at exactly the right times in the story.

On Broadway, they pu tthe intermission after Act 2, Scene 2, I believe.
The act ended with Katurian banging on the door, after killing Michael.
