From Backstage:
The wrap of John Patrick Shanley's dynamic play -- coupled with the finish last weekend of the limited run of the magnificent revival of Clifford Odets' "Awake and Sing!" with Ben Gazzara and Mark Ruffalo -- has whittled the number of nonmusicals on Broadway to six: "Faith Healer," with Ralph Fiennes and Cherry Jones (which winds up its run Aug. 13, after which Ms. Jones starts a national tour of "Doubt"), "Bridge and Tunnel" (also in its final weeks), the multi-Tony'd "The History Boys," "The Producers," "The Lieutenant of Inishmore" and "Shining City."

I saw the article in Backstage as well.
Though I hadn't realized that there were so few plays running. Come mid-August, there will only be History Boys and Inishmore left (assuming Inishmore is still running; hope it is!). There isn't anything else opening this summer is there?

Yeah I noticed that too. They also neglected to mention that Shining City closes on July 16th.

Posted: 6/27/06 at 2:05pmI was lucky enough (Blessed?) to have been invited to the Producers opening weekend, prices hadn't yet reached over $90 a ticket. I don't want to sound ungrateful....but it wasn't my favorite night in the MUSICAL theatre. I had a good time, sat four seats from Gene Wilder in the orchestra et all! I enjoyed it immensely, but NOT MAD IN LOVE with the show. I like to experience elation AND tears in what I consider a perfect show. No tears here...just marvel at the stagecraft, and joy. I felt the exact same way about Lion King and Phantom of the Opera. Don't SCREAM at me...but I sat through all three opening weekends somewhat emotionless. The Full Monty, Ragtime and Into the Woods (on the other hand), did not win BEST MUSICAL. All three musicals touched me, and gave me a tear or two in recognition of how our lives interact and intersect. All this to say...please see shows that didn't win. The riches are there...I won't mention this years shows but I felt the same way. See Wedding Singer! See Color Purple! See Drowsey! See Chitty Chitty....oops! Enough from me!

Once a month, I totally agree with you, but what shows did you actually like?

Posted: 6/27/06 at 2:26pmThis year, I thoroughly enjoyed The Drowsey Chaperone and Wedding Singer. I also had a very nice time at The Color Purple, less so at Tarzan or WIW. I enjoyed effects in each of the shows I wasn't thrilled with however. I think I fell in love with Broadway because of all the surprises. Even in the lesser shows, I almost always have a great memory or two. I said I like to cry at a great show, but I enjoy the 'marvel' aspect as well. I loved Nicholas Nickleby, Equus, The Goat, Indiscretians, M Butterfly and Largely New York with Bill Irwin. Since musicals are my thing however, I loved the year of Chorus Line, Chicago and Pacific Overtures. I also loved A Man of No Importance, The Pirates of Penzance, RENT, Avenue Q, Here Lies Jenny, Follies, Falsettos, Sideshow, Ragtime, Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park, and Hairspray...that's the great thing about theatre! Eclectic tastes...try everything! Too bad we get the flops however....and I've been to more than my share (and even loved a few of them-go figure)! I aim for the final weekend of previews, before the reviewers. And I make a consious effort to avoid all Brtoadway websites until after the show, since I don't want to be swayed by anything other than raw emotion.
