*Sighs* The show wasn't making fun of Jewish and gay people, but of the STEREOTYPES. Springtime's ENTIRE GOAL IS TO BE OFFENSIVE!!! Even beside that scene, all the making fun of Jews and gays is so tongue in cheek. I think it's all comedic gold. Mel Brooks is about as Jewish as it gets!
"shocking...insulting...and I Loved every minute of it!" That is what Springtime for Hitler is intended to be, and that is what the Producers is intended to be also.

I personally love anything that Mel Brooks has made and starred in. My two favorite films of his are Young Frankenstein and The Producers, and I completely love the show and it doesn't matter how many times I see it, I always laugh, even if I listen to the cd over and over.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 5:54pmI loved the show too, including the music, sets, costumes, and choreography. I want to see it again, with Kind and Ruck (saw Ruck on tour). I had a lot of fun.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 6:13pmIt never gets old. Except for that one time. Yeah, now I remember, last time I saw it, it was really bad. Richard Kind didn't know his lines and Hunter needs out of the closet really bad. With the right cast, it'll never get old.

How true, CurtainUp, how true!
I've never seen the live show, so I cannot judge it, but the old movie is somewhere in my top ten favorite movies of all time. Love it.
Having never seen the show, I cannot defend its quality (and I do believe its overrated, as 12 Tonys does seem a bit much for something that Mel Brooks created, much as I love and admire him), but knowing the movie, I can defend its content.
Of course its offensive. Its MEL BROOKS!!!! If you've ever seen any of his movies (except perhaps Young Frakenstein... off the top of my head, I cannot remember any racial/ethnic/religious/sexuality jokes, but they're probably in there somewhere...), you know that he makes fun of Jews, blacks, and gays all the time.
DITTO, Jon. Let's look at the list of things that have done well that could be considered offensive: Every single one of Mel Brooks's movies, the show The Producers, Avenue Q, Rent, South Park, The Simpsons, Monty Python, Spamalot (its gonna do well!), the majority of famous comedies/comdedians...
Does anyone know how the tour cast is? B/c, The Producers is here in Chicago, and I REALLY wanna see it (and I think my mom's gonna get me tickets), but I'd want to know if it would ruin the brilliant old movie for me b/c of like a bad cast or something....

Andy Taylor, who plays Leo in the tour, ie terrific. I haven't heard anything either way about Bob Amaral (Max).
The only group YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN makes fun of is blind people - and in that scene, it's the monster who's the victim!

Posted: 2/5/05 at 8:25pmJust today I read a review of the show in Chicago and the critic did not like it. Surprising, but that's his opinion. I've seen the show a number of times, but not with those two leads so I couldn't offer my opinion. Updated On: 2/5/05 at 08:25 PM

Yes, it gets old. I was not a fan of the show until I saw it. I like it now, but sometimes the jokes are too easy or expected... and the gimmicks can be tiresome.

Well, that's going to be my best laugh of the week!

Posted: 2/6/05 at 12:51pmIn my opinion, The Producers is without question THE most overrated stage musical in history; one of the worst, most forgetable scores i've ever heard. Brooks adapted his own Oscar winning screenplay from his film which of course is brilliant, but the man is certainly no Jerry Herman. Had he colaborated with pro tunesmiths like Herman the show might have been a classic. Please don't get me wrong, i have a great love for the original film version which is exactly why i was so disappointed with what i consider to be a weak and amatuerish score.

Posted: 2/6/05 at 1:12pmMahatma, Jerry Herman was originally called upon to write the music. When he met with Mel Brooks, he said that Mel should write the score himself, since he already had a few songs and he could write music.
