They're totally different, the costume on stage is more lavish for the folks in the very back.

I actually think the one on stage is better. His mask is more scary.

The movie one was really dissappointing. Major drama missed in not using the Red Death costume...and having him do the same stupid walk down the stairs was lame without that delightfully over the top costume.

There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

I think they didn't use the stage design for the red death costume in the movie was because it was too strong for film. It's the same reason Roger doesn't wear the plaid pants in the Rent film.
