I'd put Daily News as mixed/positive and Newsday and Deadline as positive.
Chris Jones from the Chicago Tribune really understood the play in a way that eluded a lot of his colleagues.

A good review. "Try taking your eyes off him."

Posted: 11/18/14 at 2:58amI really like the River, but that being said, you definitely need to see it more than once to grasp it. Even then there are twists and turns and things you catch that you hadn't before. It is a very interpretive play. I thought one thing the first time I saw it, but then changed my mind after the next time. It is definitely open to various opinions and ideas and does get alot of conversation going. The cast, led by the incomparable Hugh Jackman, are all excellent. Cush Jumbo and Laura Donnelly give wonderful and very different performances as the two women in the play. If you saw it once and didn't get it, as it can be confusing, you should consider a second viewing. Do rush or SRO. It is definitely worth it.

Posted: 11/18/14 at 1:42pmI watched it last Friday and I thought all three leads were great. I like the first half and felt like the second half tried too hard to be "Twilight Zone"-ish. I'm all for being ambiguous, but at least, give me pointers to formulate potential interpretations. Is he a psychopath, or an extremely unlucky loner, or is it all just a dream? Too many ambiguities led to indifference, IMO, as what I witnessed being reflected on the faces of the audience leaving the theatre that night.

It's really not that ambiguous or difficult. The play is about finding and losing a great love and looking to recapture or create that connection with another person, and finding it difficult, if not impossible. It is endemic in The Man's speech about having something in your hands one moment, and without your knowing it, it's gone the next. If you've known heartbreak in your emotional or personal life, an overwhelming and debilitating sense of loss, I think the play speaks to that emotion.
Of any of the critics, Chris Jones in the Chicago Tribune seemed to really get what the play is about. You can read him here:

I agree. I understood the point by the second scene.
It may not be a wallop of a show or particularly deep, but it is a great performance from Jackman and an eerie and captivating tone.
I do think people should go in as blind as possible to enjoy the experience.
