This is a message for someone who will be going to see the show in the next few days....one of the ensemble members told me (when I went to see it last weekend), that they will know TODAY whether they will be Broadway-bound.
So please, someone stage door & ask!!! I'm dying to know...
I am going on Feb 19th...so a review will ensue shortly thereafter. See you then.
Just saw a headline on signonsandiego.com that read "Broadway Bound: The Times They are a-changin". It's a preview for an article (and review I think) coming out tomorrow. Maybe that headline is a good sign...
*crosses fingers and hopes this comes to Broadway*
otis33, I didn't go on the opening day. I already saw the preview and somewhat lukewarm about the show. I want to see it after the opening to confirm my feeling.
I can't beilive I didn't see this thread before... anyway, I wish I could go see it. I Love Michael Arden. He is such an amazing performer.
lite2shine, please post a review after you watch it for the 2nd time. I am "lukewarm" about the show as well, but the performers are amazing. The story just doesn't hold up the talent in the show, IMHO.
Just got in from San DIego, and I will say this: WOW!
After the jet lag I will post more, but "THE TIMES" is
one of the most original exciting pieces of Theatre I have ever seen with the MOST talented cast!
As others have stated it is very different and as with most great ART it will have it's distractors, but the audience went crazy Opening night and when Michael Arden took the Final bow the place exploded!
The cast is still waiting to hear what the future is but it HAS to come to Broadway and the sooner the better.
After i get over the "lag" I will go on in length.
Right now I am just reveling on the fact that I saw this show at an early stage, TOTALLY AMAZING!

It isn't 100% positive, and points out some of the flaws in the show, but overall it's a good review.
My wife and I saw the show last night. Due to my advanced age, I decided to wait until the morning to post. Yes that's right someone who is a contemporary of Dylan is finally going to chance it. So bare with me.
Let me say first that I was there because I love Dylan. But I also love the theatre and place creativity just below character on the scale of human traits
I very much enjoyed the show as did my wife, and believe me, it wasn't her usual cup of tea. The three leads were all excellent. And irene2, Arden is wonderful. Much more John Mayer than Bobby Sherman.
To begin, I must mention that the Old Globe lends itself to this kind of visual three dimentional performance. Being a replica of the original, it's a very intimate setting and the sets are like placing a renaissance fair in an old English building. That part is perfect but will be lost in a big deep New York theatre.
Now we get to the Dylan part. No one on this post has discussed this aspect of the show, dispite the fact that the majority of the audience was older and were there primarily because the musical showcased Dylan music.
To try to explain to another generation the impact Dylan had on us when we were young is an exercise in frustration. You had to be there. You had to march, see the injustice and get the feeling of transforation in your thought. Dylan strung lyrics together with the grace of a spider crafting a web. He captured us in that web and raised our social consciousness. I suspect that for many of my generation it will be difficult to face this music in a different context. It is one thing to add social consciousness to the music of Billy Joel and quite another to take it away from Dylan.
Of course. Dylan now claims that he never meant to be the guru of his time but those comments seem somewhat disingenuous coming forty years and a thousand songs later.
I come down more on the side of otis 33 and jochang621. The times they are a-changin is fun entertainment. It is creative enough that the lack of book is Ok. For those of us who see Dylan in another way, the play will seem bizarre but so is entering a Victoria Secret to buy a black teddy and a Dylan CD.

So CurtainPullDowner, I take it the Arden did us proud?
Maybe it could go into the Palace when Lestat folds....maybe even by Tony time.

so, does anyone think this is gonna be the next big hit if and when it comes to broadway?
*anticipates*
The play is wonderfully creative. The Dylan music still seems vital and putting new voices to it gives a fresh life to most numbers. The animation using dance/acrobatics adds much to the show. I personally feel it can be a hit in the right venue. But this is not a mainsteam production and might meet a lot of skepticism from people who expect more than a vague story.

Beyond any expectations Trisk!
This is an Arden we have not seen yet, the Rocker, the Dancer, and the interpretor of songs from another time and place that he makes all his own, as do Sesma and Collela and the Entire Cast.
I am glad you enjoyed it "dented" .
You have the exactly right idea about the story being almost secondary, it's the visuals and the concepts of the genius of Tharp's imagination combined with the brilliance of Dylan's melodies and lyrics.
Many of the songs brought sighs of recognition from the audience.
It is certainly not "mainstream musical comedy" but it is High Energy Entertainment and a great way to introduce Dylan to a whole new younger audience and give an older audience a chance to see part of their youth put in a new perspective.
I hope they get this show to NYC soon so the momentum continues and the debates start flying.
I think this show will put young Mr. Arden (and others involved) in the TONY pool.
I say Congrats to all involved and Best of Luck!
