He's incredible. And totally underrated.

have the reviews come out for this yet? I know it opened last night, right?
i found another review in the sf chronicle which i tend to agree with, more than the SD review:

I just had another friend see this and he also came away not impressed. His big complaint was they were singing Dylan songs as Broadway numbers. When I said, “well that comes with the territory,” he didn’t seem placated. He said it is “bizarre” and “mostly just dancing and tumbling” and didn’t recommend it at all. And this from a person with strong theatrical ties who usually enjoys the avant-garde. However, he is also a huge Dylan fan and I wonder if Dylan purists are the ones most bothered by this production.
I am going to see this soon and am well versed in what this production is and isn’t supposed to be so wont be put off by Dylan sung as a Broadway-style number (I hope )

I have tix for Thursday night. I'm SO excited. My seats are student tickets and they are located in the second row of the orchestra pit. Does anyone know how these seats are?
I sat front row center of the orchestra, also student rush....we were front row center. i think they are the best seats in the house! be careful though, the cast members can see you so be sure to smile :)
if U can look at this show like a painting
Go for it
Let your mind go and Enjoiy it

irene, you friend who is a huge Dylan fan is right from his point of view and honestly CurtainPullDowner is also dead on when he says that you have to let your mind go and just go with it. I think Dylan would have "just gone with it" even in his prime but many of us who practically worshipped him will have a tough time accepting his songs out of their original context.
I believe this show will be appreciated by people who love creativity and high spirits. Many of Dylans' most adoring fans will hate it because they simply will feel it doesn't do him or his messages justice. As I said previously, you had to be there at the time to understand that gut feeling we have about his music. He was not just Abba or Billy Joel or The Beatles. He was a spokesman for a generation and removing the social consciousness from his music will be impossible to swallow for many folks.
Wait...I have a question. It's a dance piece, so does this mean Michael will not be singing? Though I do bet is he a hot dancer!
Michael, Jenn and Thom sing alot.
And Michael and Jenn Dance a great duet, it's a sweet moment in the show.

(sorry I meant to post this on this thread)
I saw Doug (standby for Michael) in the show and he was fantastic. Dare I say he is much more suitable as Coyote than Michael? (yes I saw Michael as Coyote too) Don't get me wrong, Michael was very good and super cute but he didn't look like he is Catp Arab's son or grew up in a circus, but Doug did. He had a great chemistry with Jenna too.
I stopped by the show on Sunday; Thom Sesma and Michael Arden seemed very excited to be heading for Broadway. Nice to see Michael is feeling better as well.
Anyone going to the last few shows of the SD run? Reviews please!!

its too bad Thom Sesma is being wasted if the show is as bad as they say. he is a BRILLIANT talent and has yet to be discovered and i don't KNOW WHY! he is incredible on stage.
I totally agree with you, Thom Sesma is an amazing performer on stage. If anything, being in this show means that he will be on Broadway soon and may be "discovered" in this show.
This show is "FAR" from bad.
I Loved it and it sold out and was extended twice!
Can't wait to see it in NYC!

Curtain Pull Downer...(first of all i love the name) and second..i am so glad that the show ISN'T as bad as the reviews say.
i HOPE that this is THom SEsma's BIG break because he deserves it and because he is so amazing. you can tell him Andie said so.
Thom told me he doesn't read reviews but I told him to check out this board because we were all raving about his performance :). I told him how he was getting great reviews and he seemed so happy. Everyone describes him as "Dylanesque".

Has anyone heard any more about the show getting a tune-up in Chicago before going to Broadway?
I never even heard they were thinking of a run in Chicago.
Anyway, one of the dancers in the show came to my school the other day to hold a lecture. It was pretty cool. And no, it was not Michael Arden (if it was, I wouldn't be here right now. I would have died from happiness)
I had heard they were playing Chicago before Broadway. But, there was an article in yesterday's San Diego Union Trib. about Twyla Tharp and her process, and the show's future. There was no mention of Chicago.
I can't imagine they go to Chicago. But from what the dancer told me, he says Twyla is changing the show every day. So maybe if she feels she still wants more changes. I saw it, and the only thing that needs chaning is to add some dialogue so they can develop the story more. I don't see the problem in adding dialogue. It adds more time, but it would make the expierience much more enjoyable.
It needs no Dialogue, It is an Impressionist painting set to Dylan's Music and Tharp's Staging.
I hear Chicago is not gonna happen (I agreee)
and they will be in the Brooks in September!
Art Isn't Easy
I don't know. I think the prodution level is outstanding, but as a musical, it's really lacking. Just not enough story for me. I probably would have preferred them to do what Jersey Boys did: tell a story set to Bob Dylan's music.
Apples and Oranges
Just listen to Dylan's lyrics
No way to make a popular miusical like jersey Boys
Sherrie Sherrie Baby

Take Me for A Trip Upon Yer Magic Sailing Ship
Both have there place
I like the Difficult
But I applaud Jersey
