That settles it. Sondheim wins.

Obviously both have had a huge influence on the course of musical theatre. Although my heart belongs to Sondheim I'm also rather fond of a number of Webber musicals as well (JCS, Phantom), so I can't really get on the "either/or" bus. Why can't it be both?
If you haven't read it already, I do highly recommended Stephen Citron's "Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber: The New Musical ." Compelling read, even for those with only a middling interest in musical theatre, and certainly gave me a new appreciation for Sir Andrew as well.

"Webber doesn't write the lyrics for his shows."
And Sondheim doesn't do the orchestrations for his.
See how easy it is to cherrypick.
