Posted: 8/25/06 at 1:30amBrief, brief sum-up of tonight because I'm tired. Of course, Tina was on for Laura . . . she was absolutely wonderful. I loved Laura and didn't think I'd like Tina better, but I totally, totally adored everything Tina did with the role; she was also really on tonight vocally. David Josefsberg was on for Sammy; he was great as well; Kevin Kern was on for David. Stephen was his usual "on" self; Amy was sick, but fantastic as usual; Felicia rocked my socks. Kk . . . good night!! :)

I am getting addicted to reading WS reviews
Thank you!
I sure hope this is still playing when I get to the City in October. Everyday, I grow to love this show more and want to see it.

Okay so I suck at reviews, but I'll give it a shot.
Tina - The best I've seen her yet. I don't know what it was, but her acting and singing were just REALLY good last night. Like I said before, I always liked her, but I think it had a lot to do with the cuteness factor and that nothing she did as Julia ever really bothered me (except for her sometimes weird pronunciation of 'asshole') but last night she totally blew me away. I went with my friend who's in love with Tina so we gave her lots of love all through the show - when she first walked out, we cheered for her. At stagedoor she was really sweet and appreciative of all the support - oh, and her mom was there too, so that was cool.
Stephen Lynch - I can't say anything bad about him. He is amazing, and more importantly, so is his ass in those parachute pants. (...what?!) I also asked him why he doesn't wear the pink socks anymore (am I the only crazy person that noticed that?) and his response was somewhat cryptic and strange. He mentioned something about burning them. And never speaking of them again. What a nut.
Amy - Amazing and hilarious, as always. Her voice sounded a little tired at the end of "Right In Front Of Your Eyes" but I probably only noticed because I'd heard she wasn't feeling so well before. At any rate, she was fabulous and sounded great. I noticed a bunch of stuff during the anniversary party that
I'd never seen before - I didn't know if it was because Joberg was Sammy that they did things differently, or because I'm a major first class spaceout. (My money's on it being the latter.)
Speaking of Joberg - LOVE HIM. He makes a great Sammy. I thought the delivery on some of his lines was funnier than Matthew Saldivar's - some stuff definitely got bigger laughs than usual. I also really like his voice - I've only ever heard him in ABz, so it was cool to hear more. Got a picture with him afterwards (Andy Karl is now the only original Altar Boy I haven't stalked
yet... give it time) but I didn't get a chance to tell him how good he was - he seemed like he was in a hurry and I didn't want to bother him.
Kevin Kern is adorable and the faces that he makes whilst dancing in the opening number are HILARIOUS. Also, is it wrong that he looks even hotter to me in the ugly haircut wig? I really hope to catch him as Robbie when he's on in September.
Richard Blake - Great, as usual. He plays asshole so well, doesn't he? It truly is an art. At stagedoor he was mentioning something about Constantine... I may have blocked it out.
Felicia - There are no words. She will never stop being awesome. The end.
Kevin - I cheered for his trumpet solo in "George's Prayer" so he did the "thank you" & nod to me (which greatly amused all the people sitting near us who didn't realize it's part of the show) but am I the only one that thinks it's even funnier when he does that after nobody's cheered for him?
I love this ensemble so much, it's scary. Christina as Fake Cyndi Lauper hammed it up for my friend and I because we were sitting right in front of her cheering like the psychotic freaks we are. Me and Tracee are totally BFFs because every time I see her at stagedoor I tell her how obsessed I am with her gum chewing. I'm sorry, but it's brilliant.
Random... for the first time since I've seen the show, Stephen Lynch did the "You're picking out crap" line in the registering scene. It almost seemed like it was a mistake - I don't think the other actors realized he was going to say it, because they continued on with their lines before he even finished saying
the punchline.
The crowd last night was pretty good. It seemed like the orch was full, although I heard the mezz was pretty empty. There was a nice older couple celebrating their anniversary sitting second row center, and when the woman caught Tina's garter at the end she let out the biggest shriek. Really funny.
Y'all can blame my ramblings on too much caffeine and a slow day at work.

Yeah, about the line "Your picking out crap!" He got cut off when I saw it last week. That was a little strange.
I love cheering for Kevin during his trumpet solo. I'm the only one who does it, but afterwards I feel kinda good about it... not to mention embarrassed.

Posted: 8/25/06 at 2:37pmI was going to comment on your thinking Kern looks hotter in the bad haircut wig, but instead I'm going to sit here and be all "?!?!" over Lynch putting the "picking out crap!" line back in the show. Or at least attempting to. THAT LINE IS FUNNY! Holy crap, I'm glad it's back. LOL

He used that line when I saw it. I actually think it's one of those really cheesy but funny lines. I like it.
Would anyone like to share some stuff Stephen uses instead of that line? I've always been curious about what he says.

thespian geek - It brings out his cheekbones beautifully. No joke!
When I first heard about the 'picking out crap' line, I didn't think it was all that good so I didn't see why people were mad it was cut from the show. But the way Stephen Lynch delivers it all sarcastic and grouchy makes it funny - which is why it was so strange that the punchline got talked over, because that's kind of the part you need to hear... to laugh? I don't know. It was weird.
And normally I think he just doesn't say anything at all. Robbie and Julia do some random cute bickering and that's when the sales lady steps in and starts singing.
Another line that keeps getting taken out and added back in is right after Casualty of Love, when Robbie asks if anyone wants to do the hokey pokey.

The two times that I've seen the show without the "picking out crap" line, Stephen has done two different things - mumbled bickering with Laura, and said "Well I'm just trying to help!!!" I am a big fan of that picking out crap line, though, so I am happy it's back.
(Andy Karl is now the only original Altar Boy I haven't stalked yet... give it time)
"Give it time"....how's about four days, since he joins the cast on the 29th?

Awww, I'm glad to hear the "you're picking out crap" line is back. I wanted to hear it Saturday, but he and Tina did the mumbled bickering thing instead. At least I got to hear the "hokey pokey" line at the end of Casualty of Love.
That was a great review, and the pink sock thing is reaaallly funny. Poor guy, he had the huge sign in Times Square, the mullet wig, the pink socks...he's never gonna live any of this down.
