Posted: 5/7/06 at 6:48pmI saw the first preview way back when and I thought they had great chemistry. They seemed to be improving and laughing at one another pretty genuienly during "come out of the dumpster" and "grow old with me." And when Robbie sees her through her window, I really felt for both of them. I wanted them to be together so much, but it was just the way things were working out.

"Tina Maddigan went on as Julia and I thought she was amazing!"
But of course! Isn't everyone amazing? It appears that way from the posts on this board

I saw the show on Friday and it was fantastic. Stephen Lynch holds his own. he is so nice about singing playbills and taking pictures. I would go see this show if it was just him. I think he is perfect for this part, and maybe mostly comic parts, but he can sing, and obviously play guitar. this role was made for him. I hope it starts him off in a great career on broadway.
felicia does steal the show, i agree about basically no chem between stephen and laura. and plot problem ~~~ Glen is not awful enough to make me want her to dump him.
and amy, she kicked ass, i almost wanted robbie to end up with holly, she was so good!

Plot problems, understudies, etc aside - I'm just glad Laura's sister is going to be ok.
Although, I do wish I had seen Tina because I love watching how different actors have different takes on the same role.

Just a random question... If Laura's sister is going to be okay, then why is she missing performances?
I guess "the show must go on" work ethics died with the Golden Age.

Benanti.
I had a number of friends at the show Saturday night who all said Tina was FANTASTIC. I saw the show yesterday afternoon, and everyone from the night before siad everyone expected Tina to go Sunday as well...I'm of the idea that Tina is the perfect Julia, so I was disappointed when I arrived at the theatre to pick up my tickets and saw Laura outside the stagedoor talking to one of the stagedoor guys.
Got over my disappointment quickly, though, because I've seen Laura before, and while I don't think she's right for the role, she's *far* from terrible. In fact, yesterday was my fourth time seeing the show, and I don't think I've ever been more entertained by Laura than I was yesterday. I feel like she's finally fully comfortable with herself in this role, and she's starting to add these extra little things to her performance that are just fantastic and completely perfect for the character. Right before "Awesome," she hung up the phone ("This is the Touch of Class - not touch of what you said!") and before seeing Robbie, she squeals out this loudpitched "EWW!!!" Also, her drunk ramblings during Saturday Night in the City have just become absolutely unintelligible, and my friend and I absolutely died when she stopped speaking and just started making noises instead.
The entire cast seems to be getting more comfortable everytime I see the show, which is really wonderful to see. And can I just say...I know everyone always mentions Stephen, Laura, Amy and Felicia, but Matthew Saldivar, who plays Sammy, is one of the highlights for me now. Right In Front of Your Eyes is one of the absolute most hysterical songs I've seen performed, just for his bouts of physical comedy. Everytime I see him, he adds more leaps and jumps and I cannot even imagine how much fun that song must be for he and Amy Spanger to perform.

I agree about Matthew, I took my boyfriend to see the show and he can't stop going on about how funny he was - he's perfect in the role.
And I actually like Laura as Julia - but I'm biased and I think some of that has to do with my irrational hatred of Drew Barrymore combined with the fact that um... I really like Laura. In general.

Laura had no idea what was going on with her sister and she had every right to head on home and find out what was going on. Family is first, in my opinion. You seem to forget that while, yes, the show must go on, it is work. And had she been working in a cubicle 9-5, she would leave that, too, if her sister's life had been in danger. Once she found out what was going on, she gladly returned to work the next afternoon before heading to her sister's to be with her at a rough time.
She might be a Broadway star, but she's human, too. Try to remember that these are people, too.

That would be performance, singular. And probably because she couldn't predict the future when she got the initial news. And since you don't know what message she had received, how can you judge?
