If someone cant see that her performance in Monster's Ball was raw and profound it is their lose. The scene everyone overreacts about is real, poignant, sad and honest. The hand freeing the birds from the cage is beautiful and haunting. The look she gives him when he is going to have sex with her from behind is what makes a great actress, she looks ashamed and hurt and then he realizes this woman needs love! The fact people can't she how hurt this woman is shocks me. It is one of the most honest and human performances in recent years. Layers, I guess only few see. It is too bad. As for Nicole Kidman beating Julianne Moore for Far From Heaven or Hilary Swank winning over Annette Bening twice for one note roles seems crazy. In the end can you really tell someone they are wrong for think one person rang more true. A HUGE factor if you want to admit it or not is if you like the actor or not.
Jane Wyman winning for Johnny Belinda over Olivia de Havilland in the Snake Pit is just a joke to me.
The 1940 year at the oscars was a mess too. Ginger Rogers over
Davis for the Letter, Hepburn for Philadelphia Story and Fontaine for Rebecca. The following year they gave it to Fontaine in her average performance in Suspicion beating Davis for Little Foxes and he more talented sister (opinion) de Havilland in Hold Back the Dawn.
62 was an amazing year but as much as I love Anne Bancroft in the miracle worker I would have to say Katharine Hepburn owned that year in Long Days Journey Into Night.
Charlize Theron did a good job but I think Naomi Watts should have won that oscar for 21 Grmas. I believed every moment. Stunning work in my opinion.
