Wow. I forgot I even started this thread.
over the river and through the woods
the goat or who is sylvia
Kelsey Grammar was indeed CASSIO (not Cassius, he's from that other Shakespeare play).
That "other Shakespeare play" would be JULIUS CAESAR...
THE VISIT.
absurd and breathtaking. truly a wonderful piece of spoken word theater

I still get chills every time I think about it. I still remember the few seconds of silence when the play ended, before the applause began. Sheer brilliance!
Streetcar Named Desire at the Hartford Stage.
"That "other Shakespeare play" would be JULIUS CAESAR..."
Yes, I know it was Caesar. That's what we call sarcasm.
The Normal Heart.
There isn't a doubt in my mind.

BENT, STREAMERS and ANGELS IN AMERICA are "up there" in my favorites.........HOwever,,,,,to select the BEST---certainly the original Broadway production of Neil Simon's
PLAZA SUITE
I really liked the latest revival of 'NIGHT MOTHER. Incredibly sad show, but very good.
NOISES OFF is quite possibly the funniest play ever written.

Just reading everyone's picks brought back memories, but I have to second "Talking Heads" and add "Les Liaisons Dangereuse" (with Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan). It was years ago but brilliant.
"Angels in America"
"Speed the plow"
"M butterfly"
And a play every critic seemed to hate but was one of the most thrilling nights in theatre( at the time ) " The twilight of the golds", the stage version was so much better than the film, who ever played the mother in that was stunning..
The Normal Heart (#1 in every aspect of my book)
Angels in America (not very surprising)
Proof (brilliant)

FROZEN - Byrony Lavery.
Matt G, my mom loved beauty queen and saw it a lot fo times off broadway.
My favorite is by the same author, THE PILLOWMAN.
Loved W;t, The Laramie Project, I Am My Own Wife and Prelude to a Kiss (missed Angels in LA & NY, I could kick myself)but I'm gonna say
Nickeled and Dimed
because nobody else has and becuase I really went nuts for the production when i saw it at the Taper in LA a couple of years ago.
I still smile when I think of it.
Angels in America
Take Me out
The Pillowman
it surprises me so many people list amadeus. i've only seen the mckellen version on film at the lincoln center library, but I feel Shaffer vastly improved on his script for the film and that the film is far superior to the stage play. but perhaps this is only in hindsight of the film.
Hands down; Vieux Carre. There was a production in my hometown (Omaha, NE) three years ago that absolutely blew me away. What a powerful show; wish it were produced more often.
Cheers,
C.
How could i forget...
Indiscretions (Les Parents Terribles), with Kathleen Turner and Jude Law...
My pick would be Golda's Balcony...but...is that show considered a play or a "one woman show"?
I have seen a lot of great plays but there is one above the rest!
1. The Normal Heart- Raul Esparza/Public Theater
2. In The Continuum- 59 East 59th
A few other top contenders:
Fuddy Meers- I love Abaire
Curse of the Starving Class-
Take Me Out
The best time- Vampire Lesbians of Sodom
