The greatest Triple Threats, Then & Now

Posted: 8/22/03 at 6:12pmI agree- Tammy Blanchard is a triple threat. Her strongest point is her acting. She is an AMAZING actress. But she can sing and dance as well.

Posted: 8/22/03 at 6:22pmNo, not an awesome singer and dancer- but you don't need to be to play Louise. In my opinion, it's the acting that makes that role, and Tammy acted the hell out of it.

I wouldn't say that Tammy is a triple threat yet. Perhaps it's just the role she's playing that doesn't allow her to be, but I'm not yet convinced that she can fall into a triple threat category.
Chita is definitely one of (if not the) biggest triple threat still around.
So for anyone to say, "Chita Who?" needs to brush up on their theatre knowledge.
Bernadette is awesome, and definitely falls into the category as well. That woman can sing, dance, act....and she's totally nice.
I gotta say, those people who get overly defensive of someone they don't even know, and are merely obsessed over, scare me. lol
Yeah, Bernadette is aweseome. Not everyone is going to feel that way though, and you need to respect opposite opinions on this message board; or don't post here. Name calling is really innapropriate.
This is not a Bernadette Peters fan message board. This is a Broadway/Theatre message board. Everyone here is not going to agree on every subject. If you can't handle the fact that some people don't like her singing or acting, then I would stick to her fan message boards only. Because even I'm a huge fan of Bernadette's, and I find your comments to be out of line Bernadette88.

Posted: 8/22/03 at 7:37pmI thought in the entertainment world the term triple threat meant one who was an actor/actress, dancer, singer. No?

what about dame edna? she can sing, dance and is funny as hell, thus qualifying her as a triple threat. plus she's conquered a number of mediums, did anyone see nicholas nickleby? :)
and what about more male triple threats? i think my pal jerry orbach is a talented guy. joel gray, brent b., harvey... plus all the new boys.
i also think the vast majority of the 42 steet cast are real triple threats.

Okay, just have to interject this before I say my other stuff... As much as we all love Bernadette, she isn't the queen of Broadway, and Chita still far surpasses her in the triple threat/diva department. Don't ask me to explain it as I am still half asleep, but they are two different types of talent -- and that's like comparing apples and oranges.
Anyway, as for my list....
Vicki Frederick as Cassie in A Chorus Line
(definitely tops my list)
Bianca Marroquin
Michele Pawk
Roxane Carrasco
Tracy Shayne
Donna Lynne Champlin
Male triple threats... oh god, this requires thought lol I'll have to get back to you on this part

Posted: 8/23/03 at 12:26pmI agree- Liza Minelli is an ULTIMATE triple threat. Each talent she has balances out the others. She is just as good an actress as she is a singer and dancer, or was. She was and still is, absolutely amazing!

Billy the only other performer I can think of who has achieved Liza's "awarded" level of excellence in singing, acting and dancing, is
Judy Garland

Tammy Blanchard definitly has potential. I agree that her strongest point is her acting, and her dancing wasn't bad. And while I do like her voice, I think that's the thing she needs to work on the most.
Sutton Foster, she's just amazing!
David Burkta is up there too!
I'm sure Bernadette was very good (dancing wise) when she was younger (Dames At Sea, George M!), but right now, her strongest points are her acting and singing.

Bernadette certainly could dance as a youngster. "Star Tar" in Dames at Sea was a particularly crazy number...it's a big tap number that culminates in her character doing two cartwheels and singing either an A or a B, I can't remember. I believe "George M" was a big dance show as well, and Ron Field's "On the Town," in which Bernadette played Hildy, is of course, a major dance show.
As recently though, as The Goodbye Girl, despite it's general awfulness, Bernadette was the centerpiece of the very funny choreography for "A Beat Behind," which had her literally a beat behind on all of the dancing, including the kickline.

To me, a TRUE triple threat is someone who dances, sings, and acts EQUALLY as well. Everyone has their stronger points, but all three have to be up to par. Not someone who is an amazing dancer, passable actress, and can carry a tune. Someone who can dance with passion and has good technique, someone who you ENJOY listening to sing a song, and someone who acts the hell out of both the song and dance, as well as delivering their lines well. THAT'S a triple threat.
The top two that come to my mind as of now are Ruthie Henshall and Karen Ziemba. They both have fabulous voices, well trained dancers, and great actresses.
I think Chita's fab and I'm a huge fan, but I don't think her voice matches up to her dance abilities. And as for Bernadette, I'm a huge fan as well, but she's the package deal, like Bebe. They're PERFORMERS. All three work well together, but I wouldn't classify either as a "singer" and I certainly wouldn't classify Bernadette as a "dancer." They can both sing, though, and convey emotion well through their song and dance. They're performers. I would be more apt to call Bebe a triple than Bernadette, mainly because her dancing is strong.... but I still don't think she has the greatest voice in the world. (And she's been my favorite actress since I was a baby... I can put all bias aside, I can! See!)

Posted: 8/23/03 at 6:50pmI agree with Daisy- a triple threat needs to act, sing and dance equally as well. That's why I have yet to see a triple threat like the great Liza Minelli was in her younger years.
