When I saw that episode, that was my first thought! She would be wonderful! If she was in the show with John Tartaglia it would be an Avenue Q Las Vegas Reunion! They would certianly have the chemistry for the Mary and Bert relationship.
Andy Karl would be such a charming Bert! He auditioned for the role in the original London company. I would actually go see this show again (I saw it once when it opened) if he were Bert.
Regarding Christian Borle as Bert... Can he dance? I've only seen him in LB and would think the answer is now, though I may very well be wrong... Bert has to be a dancer as well; can Christian do it... Honestly, b/c I don't know.
Laura Michelle Kelly was strolling past the Marquis last Wednesday morning and is apparently auditioning. She didn't say it was for Mary Poppins, but it'd be AMAZING if she was the next Mary. Her performance nearly rivals Julie's!
(And yes I realize the probability of her auditioning for Mary Poppins is slim-to-none based off her relationship with Cameron Mackintosh) Updated On: 8/11/09 at 02:44 PM
...not to mention the fact that Laura Michelle Kelly wouldn't have to audition for a role she created, pli1018.
KirbyCat, to make a long story short, Kelly was promised the opportunity to go to Broadway with the show when it ultimately transfered. When the time came to actually put that down on paper, Cameron Mackintosh told her that the producers wanted her to stay in the show right up until rehearsals began for the New York production, which would require a hefty extension of her original contract.
Kelly balked at the idea of renewing because she wanted to have time to record a solo album and take a bit of a break before heading to Broadway. When Mackintosh refused to agree to that, the deal for her to move with the show fell through.
Since then, she's released another album and done a couple shows, most recently originating the role of Galadriel in the West End production of THE LORD OF THE RINGS musical. She also played The Beggar Woman in Tim Burton's SWEENEY TODD film and appeared as Molly in the London workshop of the musicalization of the film GHOST, but it would be terrific to see her back on Broadway.
Her Mary is truly incomparable.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
I love that people who post on these boards have so much inside information. Its so interesting and exciting! Thanks to everyone who takes the time to share with others!
Wow... I truly feel bad for her because she never made it to New York! But then again, I'm glad she didn't come here because so many other opportunities opened up to her!
I rather watch paint dry than watch Christian Borle on stage. So glad that Aaron Tveit ended up headlining CATCH ME IF YOU CAN instead of Borle. That's a pity about Laura Benanti, I guess Margo Lion isn't a fan? Oh well, Benanti's career is pretty hot right now, and she's done far more interesting (if not as high profile, of course) than MARY POPPINS could ever hope to be. I remember when the rumors pointed to Anne Hathaway, that'd have been fun. I wonder if they are going to have another no name actress do the part, or if they'll at least get a recognizable Broadway actress (by that I mean Annaleise van der Pol/Brynn O'Malley/Jenn Gambatese types).
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Jenn recently just had a baby and is most likely taking some time to tend her new baby and spend time with her husband. However, I'd love her to be Mary, because she's simply wonderful and I adore her.
I'm interested by the idea of Christian as the new Bert. I saw an understudy when I went to see the show, and I didn't get to see Adam, but the understudy was fabulous.
Also, I hope the rumor of "Temper, Temper" being taken out is simply that, because that song was brilliant, despite scaring me .
"Anybody that goes to the theater, I think we’re all misfits, so we ended up on stage or in the audience.” --- Patti LuPone.
Oh, I had no idea.. His ability to dance was my biggest worry of this rumor but its good to know that he can dance. Whoever it is I hope he's good. With both of them though because I love Scarlett as Mary. And Jenn I feel would make a good Mary as well... Hopefully they announce this soon!
How could Stephanie have played Mary, when the only US production until six months ago was Broadway? The tour has not even been to LA yet! Unless, you mean she was Mary at Disneyland or something. Updated On: 8/12/09 at 10:34 PM
