Oy! Gere hammed it up even more than Bostwick did.

Crack open the paperback and find out. I know the original version was published, swears and all (albeit with a misprint leaving the second half of "Summer Nights" much later in the script -- you can tell it's a misprint because there is literally nothing suggesting such an abrupt version of half of the song either earlier or later), in the Stanley Richards anthology Great Rock Musicals.

I don't think that paperback is in print anymore. It looks like it was published when the show moved to Broadway in '72.
EDIT: I see there are several available from the amazon marketplace at reasonable prices. I may just order one. It was published by Pocket Books in 1972 and is 160 pages.

I found this cool pic of the 1976/77 Broadway cast at NYPL Digital. That's Marilu Henner as "Marty", a role that she originated in the original 1971 Chicago version. I believe that is Mimi Kennedy as "Jan" on the left.

Interesting write up about the show and "Grease: Live!" by New Line Theatre's Scott Miller.
He writes:
"Given that I gave some props to Fox for doing Grease in the first place, I also have to ask: why do people keep trying to make Grease family friendly? The Muny does it too. Grease is a story about how cars and rock & roll changed sex in America. No matter how you censor it, it's not family friendly. It will always be about a bunch of high school kids trying to get laid. It doesn't matter what individual words you take out of "Greased Lightning" (and what the fuck is a "real draggin' wagon"?) - it's still about getting laid.
And BTW, who was the genius censor who decided "flog your log" was okay, but not "fongool" or "lacy lingerie"...?"
