My thoughts on the chandelier have nothing to do with my lack of imagination. I just feel that the chandelier fall is *expected*, and anything else would seem a bit anticlimactic. I mean, if I'm going to see Phantom of the Opera, I'm going to want a chandelier to fall. If it is simply a blackout, with perhaps a spot light on a chandelier, I don't know, for me that just wouldn't do it. I am of course speaking from the point of view of someone who *cares* about such things. I'm sure plenty of High School drama teachers would simply do the show for name value, with little consideration to such special effects, or their importance. Once again, just an opinion.

I just dislike Phantom due to personal taste. I do appreciate it for it's spectacle, and I know the music is good and the show well put together. I am just not a fan of the music. Not saying the show isn't great, just not my taste.
And I'm going to say this and watch the fire rain down.
...I don't think Elphaba is that difficult to sing. I do agree with Sondheimgeek, no doubt singing only 5 shows is far more do-able for a high schooler. My concern is, how many high schools are going to even have the person to sing the role, let alone 5 times? Once again, I am working on the assumption that a director will care and will do the show only if the talent exists. I'm sure there will be plenty of Elphaba's who get the role because they sing the loudest (and phantoms too)
I guess I just think that the chandelier plays a much greater role in Phantom, than any of the other set pieces do in Wicked. The exception I would say, would be Galinda's bubble. But then I would make the argument that Galinda doesn't really need to *fly* in on a bubble. That is, a bubble does not have to fly in with her in it, I could, use my imagination and get around that. Unlike the chandelier, the fact that it flies in or not, will not hinder the show. Just having a discussion folks.
