Idina Menzel winning after singing horribly and very out of tune.

well, the voting doesn't exactly take place during or after the Tony ceremony performance. And considering the favorites were T. Pinkins and D. Murphy, it makes sense if the vote was split between the two, allowing I. Menzel to grab the trophy. Or maybe people did vote for her over the others...

Thanks for the info, magruder! Didn't know that. I certainly agree with Daniels, though. Why would they ever designate John Adams as a supporting character? He's the LEAD! Now I'm put out. :P

Sort of related to this thread, but kinda off subject, I have 2 questions:

1. Who were the nominees and who won a few years back when Ripley and Skinner were co-nominated for 1 tony for Sideshow?

and 2: Isnt is strange ( and kinda f'ed up) that these 2 performers weren't nominated seperately?

Yes that's me. No, it's not a Rent homage.

Actress (Musical)
1998 Actress (Musical) Winner - Natasha Richardson (Cabaret)
Nominees: Betty Buckley (Triumph of Love)
Marin Mazzie (Ragtime)

Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner (Side Show)

I love that they were nominated together...they loved it, too. They worked as a team, and to nominate one and not the other, or make the vote split, would have been messed up.

Daniels, like the rest of the cast, was billed below the title, which auomatically makes you eligible for the featured rather than the lead category (actors above-the-title are automatically considered for the lead category). Under the current rules -- not sure if the this was the case the season 1776 was on Broadway -- a show's producers may petition the Tony nominating committee requesting that a below-the-title actor be considered in the lead category (or an above-the-title actor in a smaller role be considered for the featured category) as long as they do so in writing within two weeks of opening night. It's then up to the committee to make the decision as to the proper category. If no request is made, then the billing in the opening night playbill will determine the category. Again, I'm not sure if the rules were the same back in 1969, but that's basically why Daniels was placed in the featured category.

It's the same reason Tammy Grimes was nominated in the featured actress category a few years before for playing the lead in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" -- she wasn't a star yet at that point in her career, so she was billed below the title. Unlike, Daniels, though, she accepted her nomination and later took home the Tony.

In the billing, I gather that everyone in 1776 was listed below the title, which would automatically put Daniels in a featured category. Unlike the jockeying that goes on now, it seems the rules were more stringent in that regard in 1969.

Of course, my top two, Dreamgirls and Ragtime losing best musical but as I've said many times, the most egregiously flawed Tony year of recent times, as far as wins and oversights, was the 2000 season. Contact winning best musical should be a source of shame to any committee member who voted for it, as were many of the nominations themselves, for the same reason you all seem to be outraged at the thought of any of the ladies from Smokey Joe's winning. And Sherie Rene Scott and Orfeh being snubbed completely for their turns in Aida, and Saturday Night Fever, respectively. It was also a travesty that Winokur won over Peter's. But that's a whole heated debate in and of itself. I also, as I've stated before, feel Pinkin's deserved the Tony this past season and Veanne cox was unfairly snubbed as well.

My favorite slipped-through-the-cracks performance was Reba MacIntire in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. Bernadette won the Tony for but her replacement Rebas' performance was in every way superior - it was one of the very greatest musical comedy performances I have ever seen. But because she was a replacement, she was not eligible for any award.

Alas, the ENCORES! reunion with Brent Barrett for PAJAMA GAME never came to be (imagining them duetting "There Once Was A Man" !!!!), and her TV show has since kept her away from Broadway...and her planned ANNIE GET YOUR GUN TV special fell through. Damn.

Lion King over Ragtime
Alan Cumming over Stokes (for Ragtime) - I don't care what anyone says, the Emcee is a supporting role!
Harvey over Antonio or Stokes
Krakowski over Stuart Masterson
Winokur over Peters
Latessa over Michael Cavanaugh (Cavanaugh IS the show!)

How could I forget Krakowski? I think many of her fellow nominees deserved that Tony a bit more, especially Masterson.
