I'm sitting her reading through past Tony winners and I don't even REMEMBER Gretha Boston in Showboat. LOL Was she even in the show? That win totally blows my mind.

yes she was in the show she can also be heard on the cast recording for the revial!! :)
Tonya deserved it, though.

Not sure what axe you are grinding, but Gretha Boston played Queenie, and was excellent. Bit of a revolutionary performance too, as it broke from much of the typical mannerisms of how the character has been played.

I actually did see Showboat but barely remember the character of Queenie, let alone Gretha's performance. I never understood her win and still don't. For me Gretha's win falls in the same category as Judi Dench winning for Shakespeare in Love. Huh? I love Dench but I never understood that win either.
Helen Gallagher winning for No, No, Nanette
over
Elaine Stritch for Company
And you are how old?

38. Answer the question.
Me? Why?
No, KuhnKrazy.
Who would you have preferred to win over Gretha Boston? She was nominated against the three girls from Smokey Joe's Cafe: B.J. Crosby, DeLee Lively and Brenda Braxton, all of whom were absolutely fine, but I don't think Boston's win was a surprise or strange in the least.
"Lion King" winning over "Ragtime"... still scratching my head !
KuhnKrazy did post an age, but must have edited it out.

53. Old enough to express my opinion on an online forum. This should be fun. I'm looking forward to seeing how you will you use that bit of information to try to discredit my *opinion*, because you're probably the type who takes it personally when someone disagrees with your opinion.

I did edit mine out after I realized I was talking to a man. A woman should always reveal her age after the man.

I asked your age, because your first post had an air of flippancy that seemed like the hallmark of the young and ill-informed. It seems so strange to be railing against Gretha Boston's (well-earned) Tony Award almost a decade later. There are other wins that are far more strange than hers.
I think Avenue Q winning best musical this year was pretty strange. I do not mean undeserved, so don't jump all over me. I just mean that I expected Wicked to win and I think most people did as well. If Avenue Q won, Urinetown should have won over Millie!
that's not a very good analogy... one has nothing to do with the other... Updated On: 9/15/04 at 08:46 PM
Millie winning over Urinetown
TLK winning over Ragtime

As I already explained, I was reading through a past Tony winners' list and that particular name jumped out at me. It would have been flippant for me to have not seen the production and then post a topic questioning Boston's win. However, having seen that particular production, I feel confident expressing my opinion on the matter. I don't think she deserved to win. I barely remember her in the show. Period. That's my opinion and nothing will change it, unless you know where I can buy a ticket to a time machine so I can revisit the Gerswin, re-assess and/or relive her performance and hold it in my memory bank forever. Thank you for worrying about whether or not I am well-informed on my opinion, but I can take care of my opinions from here on out. Very sweet though. :)

So, why does her winning "totally blow your mind" if your memory is so faulty and selective?

Well, I certainly remember Gretha Boston singing "Misery's Comin' 'round" in the first act of the Showboat revival -- it stopped the show. What an AMAZING performance and what a hell of an alto voice that woman had/has (she was also nominated for the Tony a few years later for "It Ain't Nothin' But The Blues"). She was far and away the favorite for the award that year -- sorry you don't remember it.
For me the strangest was CONTACT winning Best Musical.

Oh I remember Boston being a favorite for the award. I wasn't surprised by her win in the least either. I just didn't understand it.
Macgruder, my mind is neither faulty nor selective. No need to be so sensitive or take it to a personal level just when someone doesn't agree with your opinion. tsk, tsk.
