I was horrified and appalled to see a group of teenagers start the wave at Spelling Bee tonight. Once their group had done it across their 15 seats, they yelled at the rest of the audience to keep it going until it went clear around the entire room.
The wave does not belong in the theater!
Oh gawd. Next there'll be a scoreboard at the top of the proscenium: "Home: 2 Visitors: 4"
did they do it while the action was happening on stage? if not, leave 'em be. they were having fun, and it let them have more fun during a fun show. as long as people aren't distracting during the actual show, they're fine with me.

Maybe they were confused and thought it was an actual school gym?
*sigh*
I honestly would expect that kind of behavior nowadays at popular shows such as Spelling Bee, RENT, Wicked, etc. However, there is no excuse for it.
I went to see All Shook Up with my drama class last year, and our teacher stressed theatre etiquette every day for a week leading up to it. He gave us guidelines for proper dress and explained how going to see a show worked (many kids in the class had never been to Broadway shows, surprisingly). He also warned us that he would pull anyone who was being disruptive out into the lobby for the rest of the performance. During the show, we actually behaved very well.
Maybe it's because I'm a regular theatre-goer, but I can't imagine doing anything like that. It's completely disrespectful and ridiculously immature. I'd be embarassed if were to ever be a part of a disruptive group.
They did it right before the show started.
I don't care if it is before the show, it does not belong in the theater whatsoever. Their chaperones should have stopped them immediately, but they just ignored the situation and didn't say a word.
If it was during the curtain call I don't see the problem, at least they wern't booing. I don't think its that different from people dancing during the curtain call for Mamma Mia or Hairspray (which is what happened in Toronto, I don't know about Broadway but i'm assuming its the same)

Oh lord, of all the things in the world to get your panties in a twist about. this shouldn't be one of them.

That kind of thing belongs at a football game, not in a theater.

It takes place in a gymnasium inside a theater people have gone to great lengths to make appear like a school. Seems to me that that group was actually in the spirit of the show.
Was it okay that they laughed at the jokes?
I completely agree. This certainly does not belong in the theatre.
Zoneface- my thoughts exactly. it's harmless. it's stupid to do the wave, and I never participate in it. (thought I haven't been to a sporting event or "wave" event in 3 years) but you really shouldn't let it get to you. just let them be stupid and embarass themselves. Everyone deserves to enjoy themselves, and some people have different ways of doing it.

So if I go to Sweeney Todd, it's ok for me to start cutting people's heads off, because it is in the spirit of the show? At Lestat, I can bite people's necks? At Jersey Boys, when they smoke on stage, I can too?

Holy dumb analogies Batman!
Hey, if it was in the spirit of the show...

no, those aren't in the spirit of the show. Those are things that happen in the show, there is a difference. Just because there is a porn star in Debbie Does Dallas, doesn't mean doing everyone in dallas the spirit of the show. Having fun, is the spirit of the show in Spelling Bee, they were having, they weren't interupting the show, or hindering anyone elses viewing or enjoyment of the show, show i think you need to calm the **** down and let people have fun. Just because you're a tight ass, doesn't mean everyone else needs to be.

Bermuda shorts and surfer jams do not belong in the theater, even if you are seeing Good Vibrations!

The wave does not belong in a theater, no matter how "in the spirit of the show" it is. People do not do waves at Spelling Bees. If you can prove me wrong, please do, and I will happily take my "tight ass" and "calm the **** down."

Do people go to Spelling Bees?
Parents take pictures of their children in spelling bees. Would flash photography during the production also be "in the spirit of the show"?
